It's not that great. They have a jillion crumby restaurants. No idea how someone could put it any higher than any other crappy chicken joint. Same boring interior, same lame staff, same crappy tasting food, just has a bit more cayenne on it.

If you want real fried chicken, look elsewhere.

Gus' is pretty good fried chicken. I've eaten it in memphis a handful of times. I dont think it's any better than Reds Schoolhouse or Chicken Shack though.

I believe I've seen Gus's on TV. He uses wet batter doesn't he?

It looked like it when I was there last week. I sat at the bar and you could see in the kitchen. They were getting the chicken out of a tub that appeared to be a wet batter.

Can you point me in the direction of “elsewhere”? I love some fried chicken and always up for trying somewhere else.

I've never seen them batter the chicken but it seemed to be a wet batter to me when I've eaten there.

I knew I had seen it before. It was on the show "The best thing I ever ate" where the celebrity chefs share their favorites with the viewer. I believe it was Alton Brown but I can't remember.

I love good fried chicken and it is hard to find these days. I miss getting Mrs. Browdy's fried chicken from Browdy's in Mountain Brook Village. So much fried chicken is either too greasy or it s dry.

You aren't going to believe this but I will tell you about two of the best fried chicken dishes I've had in recent memory..... one you probably won't believe at all.

1. The fried chicken at my work cafeteria. We had a couple of soul sisters who fried all the chicken and it was so good. The crust/skin had an unusual flavor that was hard to describe but it was so good. The meat itself was very tender and juicy. Overall it was just delicious, and I never eat in the cafeteria but I made an exception on fried chicken day. Unfortunately a new vendor took over for food services and now the fried chicken comes out of a box pre fried and that mess is nasty.

2. There is a Sunoco station in the old part of Clayton Alabama that has a chicken shack in the corner. If you catch that chicken right out of the fryer, that is some of the best fried chicken you will ever put in your mouth. Perfectly cooked fresh chicken from a local supplier. The crust is perfect and when you bite into it clear juices just run out of it all over your shirt. Even the chicken strips are not from a bag but a whole fresh breast split into 3 pieces. They are meaty and offered in crispy or Cajun.

I've never tried Gus's, but I will eventually.

Yep. I like the skin to be nice golden brown and crispy, not soggy and greasy, but then I want the actual chicken to be nice and juicy. It's hard to accomplish both. One trick is to double fry it. Some of the best chicken I've had has come from gas stations in the MS Delta. We also have a lady at our church that cooks all of the Wednesday night meals that makes some mean fried chicken. Southern Fried Salvation.

I don't mind some original recipe Kentucky Fried or even Publix.

Yep, I sure can. I eat out all the time traveling for work. I love me some fried chicken too and foosacklys, gus's, all these dumb chains are not where it's at. Go check these out these real fried chicken spots and you won't be disappointed:

Best in Birmingham - Eugene's - get you some
Irondale Cafe
Bluff Park Diner

Best I ever had:

1.) Poor Calvin's - Atlanta, GA - comes with Lobster mac & cheese - realllly good
2.) Uncle Lou's - Memphis, TN - all the chicken is good and you can buy their rubs and seasonings
3.) Holeman & Finch - Atlanta, GA - kinda high dollar place for you fancy folks - if it ain't no good i'll buy it
4.) Saw's Soul Kitchen - Birmingham, AL - try the Sweet Tea Chicken (yup, it's fried)
5.) Dari Delite - Ashland, AL - best dive and best fried tenders I ever had

I could add a lot more here but they would be spread out - savannah, nashville, austin, orlando, vegas, etc. The point is there is a world of good food out there. Don't be coming on here talking big about some crappy chicken chain you never heard of. BOOM
