Had up to 40 at one time. Just have around 10 now. Pretty easy to maintain. They’ll eat the shrubs you don’t want ate first. Keep them wormed and copper bloused and they good to go. I sell a few every year for July 4 and Christmas dinners.

Better make sure you got a good fence and then reinforce the fence and then do it again. Notorious for getting out.

Can you put shock collars on goats? Get an underground fence. If dogs or predators want them, they'll get them. That's why I dont have any. Yea that’s not gonna happen. I could see one of em on top of my truck or my wife’s car first day.

I think the idea of owning goats sounds much better than actually owning goats. Truth! But I don’t mind messing with them. We had about 40 cows and a few horses my whole childhood. Plus it’ll give the kids something else to learn about.

Go ahead and fence with 2" x 4" welded wire - anything bigger one of them will invariably get their heads and horns through said fence and then be stuck because they cannot figure out how to pull their horns back through. I have lost count of how many times we had to go get one unstuck from a fence. Keeping them contained is a challenge until you figure out what works. Electric fence can be your friend if you can keep it from grounding out. Most breeds seem very susceptible to parasites. We started out with trying to raise Boers (meat breed) and we have had them drop like flies. We have had mixed breed goats and so far what we have found is that the Kiko breed is the most parasite hardy and we now have goats that are all some mixture of Kiko.
The biggest things I can tell you is to get your habitat set up first. We did everything backwards and it has been much harder. Of course, we didn't realize just how hard they were to keep contained, either. We thought a temporary pen with three strands of electric fence would be enough. It worked for maybe two weeks until they had eaten everything down to the ground. If you aren't gonna have a pasture, then keep some hay for them in addition to milled feed you will be feeding.
Oh, and you will always want to have at least two at a time unless you and any neighbors you have can ignore the constant vocalization from a single, lonely goat.
Good luck!

I got a 5 acre pasture and have never had one get out with regular field fence. If they start getting there horns stuck thru the fence. I duct tape a 12 in pvc pipe across their horns. By the time it wears off they’ve learned they cant stick their head thru the fence.
