I realized how unrealistic it has been shooting at the target form the same distance - 20 yards - over and over again. So for a start I took the 4 arrows in my bow quiver (Which I think is going to be great for hunting, but not so great for practicing) and shoot all 4 at different distances.

I was string walking and actually using the arrow tip to aim. Surprisingly enough, my point on with no string walking - index finger just below the nock is at 40 yards. These 4 shots are at 10, 20, 30 & 40 yards. The one in the bulls eye ring is 10 yards, the one in the 5" ring is 20 yards, the one high and left on the edge of the 9" plate is at 30 yards and the one high and to the right is at 40 yards. Interestingly the arrow shot from 40 yards seemed to carry more kinetic energy into the target. If it wasn't for my rubber mat hanging behind the target I think it would have been a complete pass through.

At 10 yards my finger is almost 1.5" below the nock. At 20 yards it is 3/4" below. At 30 yards it's about 3/8" below. And as mentioned earlier, at 40 yards it's just under the nock.

I don't think I would ever try a shot on an animal at 40 yards, but if a Zombie was coming my way... grin I think attempting to shoot at those longer distances will make me a better shot at shorter - 20 yard - distances.

Fun stuff...

I don't mind stringwalking but the trad police won't let you use it in competition.

It won't help much anyway unless you have everything else down so well that you are only missing left or right.

I was under the impression that you could, but you just couldn't use a tab with increments on it.

But you're saying that if you use a tab it always has to be directly under the arrow nock at all times during traditional archery?

All I'm saying Irish is that most trad shoots I've been to have a rules board up at sign up, that says no string walking. Nobody is going to walk with you and make sure but you might shoot with some %$&$ that would watch you close and tell on you. Most guys wouldn't give a rip just like me.

It won't matter at all unless you want to win some cheap trophy. I'll be shooting illegal point weight this year because I am shooting a 25lb bow because of a shoulder injury. I'll shoot and score my targets for my own enjoyment,I just won't turn in a card to win the shoot.

I got tired of worrying about the trad police a while ago. They always want to come up with some reason you can shoot better than them.

I haven't competed in several years though. Some may have changed.

Well,

I had a reply, and went to edit it and lost it.
Don't have time to type it all out, and it was basically rambling and disorganised. laugh

Good job!
Keep at it.

I was watching Clay Hayes the other day and he actually ties a tiny nocking point up on his string where his right eye can see it to make sure that he has the exact position with his head all the time. I thought that was kind of weird, because I never notice the string when I pull back to my anchor point.

I will say this... When I shoot at 10 yards and I am dropping my tab about 1.5" below the nock of the arrow, I am almost looking straight down the length of the arrow shaft and it makes it real easy to align my shot. laugh

Good shooting, especially no longer than you’ve been at it. I haven'tever been able to get string walking down, maybe I didn’t give it enough time but I’m low at 20 right off the bat, I’m more comfortable shooting split anyway so I always go back. You might enjoy some of Jimmy Blackmons archery videos as well if you got time to kill.

I shoot 3 under and never move my tab. Point on is about 45 yards but I just shoot sight picture after that. Enough repetition and you know how it should look for any yardage. I call it picture point shooting. LOL

That’s about the way I shoot split. I align the arrow but I don’t use the point so much. I’ve had enough practice I think I use the whole sight picture as well. I call it the “ that looks about right method”.:) . It does good for my purpose anyway. If I can keep my form from breaking down the aiming seems to take care of itself,at least at the ranges I normally shoot.

I use to shoot split but my point on would be about 75 yards and it made my sight picture aiming a bigger picture so to speak. My tip is always in align with the target,it just may be real close or under or over depending on distance. I don't really think about where the tip is though unless I find a target on the range that is right at point on,and then I am using it as a reference just because I don't shoot that far a lot.

I hate three under, doesn't work for me and usually makes the bow louder. I shoot split and anchor on third finger at corner of mouth to raise arrow nock on my face.

I might try that. At this early stage, I might as well experiment.

I used three under, and walked the string when I used to shoot tournaments with a long light recurve. I do not like it for a hunting rig. Just my 2 cents.

three under is more accurate at close range as it places the arrow closer under the aiming eye. You can change point on by changing which finger you anchor with.

Looks good Irish.

Need to start wearing a loin cloth, that'll tighten your groups up.

I switched over to 3 under a week or so ago. I haven't gotten enough shoot in to determine if I like it or not. Still blind bale shooting.
