While reading through the 401k thread I saw some mention of farmers "gearing up to grow hemp". I don't keep up with a bunch of national news, so I may be way behind. I know that some states have legalized marijuana in some form or another, but is the demand large enough for wide scale production? It's still illegal in AL isn't it?

Who can get me up to speed on this?

The yield per acre for pot is WAAAAY more than corn and beans right now but as more states allow legalized grows, the margins will come down. By the time Alabama legalizes it, if ever, the market will be saturated and profit margins will be far less than currently available.

They aren’t talking about marijuana. They’re talking about actual hemp. It’s basically a super crop.

Correct. Industrial hemp can be used in an estimated 50,000 different products across a wide spectrum of industries, from textiles to food products, building materials to bio-plastics, nutraceuticals to nanomaterials, ethanol to animal bedding.

It takes a long time to grow an old friend.

I understand more now I think. So hemp is legal to plant and harvest, I assume this is different from sun hemp? Where would someone sell gathered hemp, and what part of the plant is harvested (seed, stalk, leaf, or is the whole thing baled up like hay)?

Who knows anyone that is actually farming hemp? Seed cost, seed availability, buying points?

The bill was just passed to take hemp off the federal ban list, so this warm season will be the first country-wide growing season. The whole plant can be used for various applications. I’m sure the market will take time to get used to this volume that’s coming, but it’s supposed to make some other crops obsolete.

Last I read on it, I think it is legal to grow with a permit in Alabama, problem is getting the permit.

It's actually more profitable to grow hemp than mj, CBD made from hemp is a rapidly growing business.

You'll have to stop by one day for those answers.
