I have had the same fanny pack I guess youd call it for about 20 years, and I dont know whether it's been misplaced or if it got stolen out of the bed of my truck at the end of last deer season. I've been kind of bidding my time to find it this year, but I finally had enough and went and bought a Magellan full size camo back pack from Academy today. It's got a lot of room in it and besides my facemask, tree strap (to attach safety harness to), a bottle of water or two, and a pull up rope I really cant come up with anything else I need to put in it. Any ideas would be appreciated!!

Local fruit. Flashlight. Matches. Sleeping bag. You may need to stay all night sometimes if you can’t get out without punching a buck. And if you get lost you have some essentials hopefully that don’t happen. And I also carry an extra bow string.

Flashlight, extra battery, knife, water, protein bar, extra ammo, zip ties, paracord and I'm sure I'm forgetting some things.

Quit carrying all that extra stuff years ago. Try to hunt as light as possible. Generally just have a flashlight, wallet, and my phone, all of which easily fit in a pocket.

Mostly extra clothes. I sweat alot and get cold easy. I sweat on the way to the stand, no matter how little I wear and freeze to death about an hour later, no matter how much I have on. I have one of those metabolisms that makes alot of heat when im moving but dont make any if im sitting still. Bad combination for treestand hunting.

I don't back a pack anymore but I did spend the night in a swamp once because I didn't have my light.

I could carry all of that in my pockets for sure but after my bottle of water fell out of my pocket and hit my stand, seemed like a half dozen times on the way down, I had had enough lol. Gotta have my bottle of water at least, maybe even a thermos of coffee if I get in a shooting house and the wind is just right!!

My wife called the rescue squad, next morning when I got back to the boat I was greeted by the searchers. Got to the landing and it was full of people that stayed up all night, they even brought their grills. Most embarrassing moment of my life and all because I left my light in the boat cause I was just gonna scout the spot out.

I thought about that too. I walk a good ways to nearly all the spots I hunt, and thought I'd put maybe a layer of clothes inside the pack and put them on when I got to where I was hunting.

Never carry one flashlight. If you climb, carry a folding handsaw and/or ratchet pruners.

Limb saw, camera reader, Windex wipes for optics, screw in hanger, hot hands. I try to have the WMA maps from the ones I hunt. I keep my binos, gloves, hat, facemask in there to but don't carry them while hunting. Just have everything in the bag ready to go. I'll usually stuff whatever jacket I'm wearing in there and wait till I'm in the tree and cooled down before putting it on

Gotcha - Second flashlight just put in and I'll put my folding saw in there tm morning. I've got a newer spot I'm going to and dont necessarily know which tree I'll be climbing - thanks buddy!

TOILET PAPER. Multiple uses obviously, but sure makes marking a blood trail easier.

A snack - granola bar or peanut butter crackers.
Sometimes I carry a backpack. Sometimes a smaller sling pack. Sometimes just stick my stuff in my pockets.
I have 3 backpacks (small, medium and large) and a fanny pack and a sling pack. Honestly, that medium backpack is the workhorse and I could get by with just it.
I’m trying to pare my stuff down to a treeseat, pack, gun and a few sets of camos.

Calls that never get used, rattling horns, extra pair of gloves in case you drop first pair out of the tree. And of course lots of stuff that has already been mentioned.

Things usually in my pack: flashlight(s)-one headlight and one handheld, truck keys, knife, windicator bottle with powder, scent wicks (trails end 307, evercalm deer herd), 3 pack of earth wafers, bottled water or hydration bladder, binos and shoulder harness, ozonics and mount, and any extra clothing accessories such as gloves, face masks, beanies, battery powered hand warmer, power pack to recharge phone

Occasionally: tablet/laptop for checking trailcam, extra pull up rope, snacks

this can be over thought, but think for the worst then adjust, carry for it, then go hunting, and come out smiling. simple.

More than I should....gut hook, knife, flashlight, poncho, drag strap, orange skull cap, gloves, water, snack, blue bic pen, and small notebook. Like to jot down notes on. Weather sightings and kills.

I never carried a backpack until recently. Now I carry one religiously. It is loaded with an iPad, extra battery source, headphones, snacks, candy, coloring book, crayons, Pokémon cards, PJ Mask toys, etc. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Those were fun times. Gotta keep em busy.

Bottle of water, usually a bag with deer jerky and almonds, 2 flashlights and extra batteries, lighter, harness, bow hanger, 2 screw in hooks for my bag and quiver, range finder, gloves, fleece face mask, toboggan, gloves, Crossbow cocker, Crossbow rail lube, rangefinder, grunt call, hunting baby wipes, small roll of toilet paper, battery charging pack for my phone, folding saw, and a knife. If you hunt on a club and usually walk 2 or 300 yards to your stand you probably don’t need all this but i usually hunt no closer than a half mile from my truck so i need a few things others may not

Left out most important thing....TOILET PAPER..........and latex gloves....would hate to get pulled over and have my backpack searched.....would be hard to explain!!!!!!

Ill guarentee you tomorrow when I head to the woods ill have as many extra clothes and hot hands as I can stuff in it. Thinking about taking some type of hot liquid as well.

I have a few places that are only 3 or 400 hundred yards from where I park, but most of them I'm walking around 1/4 of a mile to get to them. Still though, carrying just a few necessities, you still have to sit down and with all that stuff in ur pockets it gets aggravating, to me anyway. I'd rather carry too much and not use it, than to need it and not have it.

Well 40 more yards make a difference sometimes 😂😂😂 dont really have any way of knowing how far I walk - it's a good ways, and way to far to wanna turn around and get something I forgot. Plus I'm fat so theres that too 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤸‍♀️

I keep in my backpack: calls (grunt and bleat), range finder, binoculars, hand warmer packs, my jacket rolled up and stuffed in the main compartment, deer drag assist thing, military compass, 1/2 gallon steel water bottle, rattlin horns (small ones so they fit), powerbank good enough to charge my phone multiple times over and headlamps if needed, headlamps with backup charged batteries, and I think that's it.

Calls, rattling bag, first aid, flashlights, extra batteries, latex gloves, water, maybe a snack, wool beanie, gloves, head net, ammo, knife that I won't need to sharpen unless I clean 3 deer, Pepcid AC, earplugs (if I have time)

Binoculars always in the pack or on my body. Jacket or vest can strap to the pack if I think I might need it.

A lot easier to just have the pack instead of loading/unloading pockets every time

I usually walk about 1/4mile too, uphill. I have a pretty thick base layer I wear and it seems like no matter how hard I try to take it easy and not sweat, I sweat anyhow and its running down my back by the time I get there. Then, in about 30min I start getting cold. I have a very hard time fighting the cold and I know this limits my success as a treestand hunter.

House is close, and I never hunt alone.

Nitrile gloves, toilet paper, extra flashlight, scent a way spray, wipes, cover scent, scent wafers, extra ammo, 2-3 water bottles, emergency water purification filter, knife, grunt call, can call, bivy sack, orange flagging tape, first aid kit, trauma kit w quick clot, jerky, cashews, matches, fire starter, lighter, tinder, mylar blanket, pen, charging device for cellphone, paracord, and my little buddy heater on cold shooting house days.

I’m a safety nut so I always have one in all my vehicles plus my hunting pack. Plus when using a knife to gut a deer anything can happen. A few years ago we had a member on here dad died from a knife wound while processing a deer.


I’ve said it before on here and I’ll say it again. I pack for a hunt like I did in the Army. Prepare for any situation and pray nothing bad happens.

There is so much that can happen to you or your hunting buddy while hunting it's a good idea to carry one

I cut my thumb emergency room bad with a limb saw once while climbing a tree, a first aid kit would have been very handy in that situation. I was covered in blood when I walked into the er that afterrnoon.

I also have a flint fire starter and some toilet paper rolls stuffed with dryer lint in my pack.

One thing I'll suggest is a roll of electrical tape. Couldn't tell ya how many times its come in handy through the yrs. Great for wrapping a gauze pad to stop bleeding. Just don't wrap it too tight.

For emergencies (in addition to first aid kit and quick-clot), I carry a SPOT satellite gps tracker and messenger. Gives the family peace of mind and gives me a way to call 911 if I don't have a phone signal. One of my colleagues at work hiked the AT and said it was invaluable for checking in and tracking for his family.
