Switching to TSS #9s this year. Was looking at the pattern sticky at the top of the turkeytalk page and noticed most of the TSS guys are shooting something around .560. I’ve got a couple turkey chokes but they are .660 or .665 so I’m guessing I might need a new one. What constriction range should I be looking at with the TSS?

First, you are comparing 12 gauges to 20. Second, tss generally likes more open than lead or hevi shot.

Yekrut, that’s what was throwing me off then. Makes a lot more sense now. I’ve never shot a 20 so I didn’t even think about the fact that constrictions would be different for them.

Yup, 12’s will be somewhere around a .660 and 20’s will be somewhere around a .1 less

I hate to mess with my current setup, but TSS seems to be worth the work of switching. So I'm back to square one with patterning and figuring out what load/choke combination will work best. If it is safe to shoot TSS through the chokes I already have, I will just try out the ones that Ive already got.

More than likely it is safe, is the choke you currently have rated for hevi shot? Its not recommended to shoot through non hevi shot rated tubes, but many do and have with no problems other than a few scratches.

Aren't most "turkey chokes" these days rated for HTL anyway?

You honestly don’t need a turkey choke with a 12 gauge and TSS.

This. I think more turkeys would be killed if folks just used a full choke with TSS, especially in a 12 gauge gun. I've shot amazing patterns with an 1187 and the full choke that came with it. You would have to be planning to shoot them at extreme long range before you got any advantage from a turkey choke, and the tighter choke is just a handicap on a normal shot.

I am planning on doing just that and trying the factory full. Might shoot once or two through my turkey choke as well just to see how it does at long range in case i get on a pasture bird that won’t come in. The close range shots make me more nervous than the long range ones anyways. Thanks for all the advice guys
