I’ve been toying with the idea of hunting with a cap and ball pistol just to say I’ve done it. I’ve looked at all the replica options and settled on the Uberti Colt Walker replica but never actually ordered it because I just wasn’t sure it would be accurate enough to take a shot at a deer at say 40yds. We exchanged gifts yesterday due to scheduling issues and my wife gave me a Walker and all the trimmings. I’ve been playing with it this morning and let me say I’m amazed at 45 and 50 yards with 2-3 inch groups and hits like a sledgehammer. I’m shooting swaged .454 round balls and started at 30 gr of triple 7 but it closes the groups up a lot around 45gr and knocks a dent in 1/4 steel plate. With all the reading I’ve done on these I can’t wait to play with it and see just what the possibilities are but in the meantime I’m plenty comfortable enough that if an old nanny shows up inside of 50yds tomorrow she’s in trouble

I have a Remington1858 44. max charge is 30gr with a .454 ball. I used it to dispatch a deer at point blank during muzzleloader season and was glad I had it that day , I have read with 30gr it’s comparable to a 38 special. I had thought of using it for a close 20 yard shot. Accuracy is great but the power level isn’t there.

With 45/50 gr. You’d be getting a lot more energy than Mine at 30gr. I had a buddy that used the old army ruger he loaded it up to 60grs I believe.
