I am going to be hunting a small 400 acre section of land for 4 consecutive days. The layout is a single road about 3/4 to a mile long with a green field at the furthest point. The terrain limits the number of spots to hunt but they all are along the road or at the green field itself. The question that has been on my mind is how to hunt it effectively but at the same time not spreading scent all up and down the road ruining the last few days. I have my son that is biting the bullet to sit on the green field but it makes more since to me to work our way back with each day arriving to the untouched greenfield by day 3. I normally hunt higher pressure places and know that in those types of environments deer are quick to respond to pressure and can limit a small area rather quickly but this place has not been hunted in several months so I may be putting to much thought into it. I am curious to see what some of you more experienced hunters think.

Depends on what the wind is doing. That is the first consideration on where to hunt and how to get there.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I would look at map at surrounding land and try to hunt lil funnels if it's all the same type as what your hunting I'm not sure what I'd do without scouting sum

What kind of road is it. Will other vehicles be driving on it. If it is a one way road leading to and from the plot exclusively, I would hunt it several ways. Depending on the twists and turns, I would look for a crossing that seems to well used and hang my stand off the road a ways. I have seen deer cross the roads back and forth leading to the plot. I grew up hunting in an area that had long trails leading to the plot. We walked in to our plots leaving our trucks near the trail head without it affecting our success. I have hunted logging roads seeing deer throughout the day as well.

I would look for bedding area and set up on them between the bed and plot. With the rut starting down in the southern part of the state and the next cold front coming through, any of those areas would be a good spot. Just my .02

Since you have a few days to play with, I’d look on Google Earth at this property to see if you can identify bedding areas to hunt before going all the way to hunting the green field. I’d rather be in the woods where I think the deer bed, rather than a field where they may not be feeding in daylight. I’d pay attention to prevailing wind direction before making a plan each day to minimize your disturbance in the area. Being that the road is less than a mile long I’d hoof it from the trailhead instead of driving a four wheeler in there. If you have a day that is going to be a light drizzle or moderate rain, I’d use that to scout areas off the road since that would minimize your noise. A lot of factors to consider but I’d let the wind and weather dictate what you do early on. If it comes down to the last day then you can use the green field as your fall back plan.

You are over thinking it. Find the sign, hunt it, try to stay downwind.

If wind allows, hunt green field first and last and hunt travel routes and bedding other times. Good luck. Don't let one hunt ruin the next.

Good advice. Thanks

You can’t hunt the wind in Alabama, I read it on aldeer
