Alright so I’ve got my 6 year old step son hunting with me this weekend. I’ve got snacks packed, a 22lr so he can”finish off” the deer after it’s shot, and a giant gator aid bottle. Need any tips or tricks you got on keeping them interested?

A video game that can be silenced until deer come out.

Pack a few more snacks, a stick to whittle on, a knife that he won’t cut his finger off with, binos so he can look for deer, and pics on your phone that show where to shoot the deer. I don’t like electronics to pass the time. Time should be spent observing and teaching about the surroundings.

The kid is 6. He’s not gonna observe for more than an hour. If electronics helps to make it more enjoyable for him then that’s a good thing. You have to build a “want to go” first

I can only speak from my own childhood but if you’ve got a .22 take him squirrel hunting in the morning. Walk him around, let him shoot some and keep it entertaining. Might be asleep in the stand, and much quieter for an evening sit.

He’s been begging to go, I told him 2 weeks ago I’d take him and he shot at paint cans everyday till now to get ready. Just feel he may loose interest if we don’t see a deer for the first two hours or so. May try a game on the phone.

To each his own. Keep em wanting to go. I took a 22 and shot squirrels. But my time in the woods was always a learning/teaching experience.

Hunting now is feeding, checking cameras, looking for rocks, and taking the lab to play in the woods. We get in a shooting house after lunch but until then it’s doing whatever keeps them wanting to be outside.

Extra gator aid bottle to pee in.
My son would get bored, until the deer started to feed in the field. Until then he would, play some silenced video games, we would practice writing his spelling words for the week, and eat lots of snacks and juice drinks.
Most of all find ways for him to have fun.
Good luck with your hunt.

After lunch? We do all that above and get in the stand about 4 o'clock. smile

Bring tons of clothes. Let him play in fifty mud puddles if he likes get him wet and tired. Then once dry and warm go to a shooting house or blind about 4 pm. He will be asleep or yall will see something within and hr.

A small pillow and something to put on a dirty damp floor so he can lay down. kids love sleeping in a quiet shooting house.

Consider it a day playing outside where deer will possibly but not likely get shot. I wish i had done it differently and started mine earlier so it became a part of who they are. Mine will go with me if they have absolutely nothing else going on, but they don’t crave it like me. They do love to bird hunt and fish though, so that’s what we end up doing.

Make sure they go to the bathroom before you get in the shooting house, etc. Expect “daddy, I need to poop” with about 30 minutes of shooting light left.
