I had considered giving them a try for the price point. Athlon gets pushed hard on some forums and on FB groups, mostly by dealers trying to move inventory from what I can tell. A couple people I know and trust who’ve used them say they are ok at best, even for the price point. Lots of reviews I’ve seen regarding failures and clarity issues at higher magnification even on the mid range models. I hear good things about the Cronus line but then when I’m considering dropping $1k plus on a scope Athlon isn’t going to make my short list.

I posted something about them awhile back. They seem to be great for the money as there are some good videos on YouTube comparing them with vortex. They also have the cheapest first focal plane scopes on the market.

Good glass for the money. They did cut some corners using plastics washers in the inside from what I have learned. There Facebook page has some good info on them.

I use one now. its a FFP model 8-32 power and about $400. It easily beats my vortex viper PST FFP 6-24 at 24x, the vortex was about a grand. Honestly at 32x the eyebox gets a bit picky, I really have not used over 25x very often other than to check targets so its not an issue for me.My father in law bought one, a SFP model and it seems fine as well. I may try a Cronus one day, if I do I will report back..

Simply, Athlon scopes are a China made product. They will work about like anything made in China.

Which is to say, some will be excellent, most will be OK, and some will suck. Maybe you will get lucky and get an excellent example on the first try.

In the $400 - $1000 market, I would always go used from the big 4. Swarovski, Schmidt Bender, Kahles, and Zeiss, particularly with T* coatings. You have to be careful with some of the newr Zeiss, though, because there are Chinese copies out there. I always look for West Germany on the older ones.

Same thing with Vortex, they too are mostly china made but with a larger price tag. I have had a bad one of them, and a couple good ones as well. For me, customer service makes or breaks a company and vortex broke it for me. They did NOT stand up to the reputation. I have not gotten to use the Athlon warranty, if I do I hope for better, but you never know.

The Vortex scopes I have owned were made in the Philippines or Japan. Electronic sights were China

Some are still that way, some are now made in china. Not sure which ones exacty. For the record the scope I had trouble with (only one) was a higher end Phillipines made scope.

Only the Crossfire is made in China the others are made in the Philippines and Japan. Vortex has the best CS in the business u fluck it up or it breaks on it's on they replace it no questions asked. There are other optics manufacturers following vortex for good reason they were loosing customers to them.

Have you used the warranty? When I had to use it I did NOT get that customer experience. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, it was close to christmas.

That is what bothers me about Vortex, you see 10,000 post about how good their customer service is, from people who have actually had to use it.

I have several Vortex products, and am happy with them, but prefer to buy stuff with no intention of ever finding out how good the companies customer service is.

Yes. The best warranty is one you never have to use...

Vortex customer service is one of the best in the business. Nearly everyone that has owned a Vortex has had to use it.

That's why I wouldn't buy one of those POS. Their expensive stuff is good quality but their cheap stuff is Tasco. There are better options for the money. I am pretty sure they only make 1 scope over $500 with a standard V-plex reticle. That should tell you everything you need to know they are marketing and gearing all their offerings towards the mall ninja crowd.

The ONE I had trouble with was the highest end one I have of theirs. It is a Viper PST-6-24x50 FFP Mil/mil was about a grand if I remember correctly. I also have an HST 6-24x50 SFP (moa/moa) and it was MUCH clearer,.

I agree about the warranty, you see a LOT of folks saying how great it is and rightfully so (for them it was good?) but why so many people having to use it? My one bad experience is all it took for me to find a different brand and honestly for my money the athlon has been a nice unit. Repeats well, holds zero and is clear.

Well not to derail y'alls conversation, but it's scary how many people i hear talking about "having to use their warranty" on new equipment, guess it's a good thing they have good customer service...

No problem, I do feel the need to mention that they ALMOST always have good customer service. Seeing the amount of times it has to be used, I dont like those odds! On the original subject the athlon that replaced is has been great. I wouldnt be scared to buy another one. Who knows might get two good ones in a row?
