Sad, sorry state of affairs at AU. Pitiful
The left lane is for the the purpose of moving the flow of traffic forward regardless of the speed limit. If your impeding the flow of traffic get your ass in the right lane. It's really that simple...

I'm certainly not a fan of AU's offensive coaching staff but I fail to see why this matters much. If Asa turns out to be worth his salt, he will never see his senior year anyway due to the NFL draft. If not then there's really nothing lost.

This is why attention to details matter. According to Martin's mother, they told the coaches what was going on but they didn't believe them, check on it or care. Or whoever kept up with the play list screwed up. Possibly all of the above. Complete incompetence. Perfectly illustrates Auburn's football situation. This kind of chit doesn't happen with Saban. His "Do Your Job" mantra isn't just a little CEO pep-talk sign above the urinal.

So mama asked the coaches for a redshirt this season for her little boy ASA. (specific quote from her in the last couple paragraphs). Mom needs to realize that big time D1 college football is a business. AU staff might have felt that they needed him in the MS State game to win it. Maybe someone was on the sidelines injured or they suspected someone else would not be back in time to play in future games and Asa would have to be used or whatever. That kid is bought and paid for by that free education that he's currently getting and if the coaches decide they wanted to use him in one, four, five or all twelve games, then mama has no choice but to suck it up and transfer him if she wants. Maybe they intended to use him more toward the end but he was laying down in practice. Nobody knows for sure but the staff. I can tell you that if the coaches at a premier SEC school feel that a certain player can help them win a crucial game, the last thing they are worried about is that kid's redshirt. The pressure to win is that high and there are a dozen other high school senior Asa's out there just begging for the chance to sign with Auburn and show their talents starting this summer.

abolt, I get that and agree. Coaches usually do what is necessary to win.
But once you burn that kid's redshirt with only, truly, a handful of plays in the first 4-5 games, why would they not put him in more often later in the season?
I know that goes back to "doing the best thing to try to win" but if this kid is a superstud hoss RB and they're having issues at RB but don't-won't use him that seems idiotic.
Perhaps he had fumbleitis or couldn't grasp the playbook. Myriad possibilities. But it just looks weird to only play him a few plays all season, burn the redshirt on what might be a questionable or mistaken deal, and then this comes out making it sound even more like the coaches are incompetent.
I'll bet Chip Lindsey wakes up every morning now with a smile on his face to get out of that.

How does Asa Martin not get some blame for this also? Like, shouldn't HE have known how many games he's played in and let his coaches know before they called his number to go into the game? Malzahn gonna Malzahn...

I know enough about asa since he's from Decatur and I doubt his mom can count to 5 so I'm betting on some shoddy reporting from the media. Yea now momma may be mad but I bet at the time she had zero clue.

Yea now momma may be mad but I bet at the time she had zero clue. A lot of people knew. WJOX talked about it several times through the season around about the time that the redshirt was burnt. I wouldn't know if she knew or not or even cared for that matter, though.

I just read where he was transferring. Does Gus have any backs that can tote the rock like he needs next season?
