Tried my hand at it last night under the 69 bridge. Now some history, I'm the WORST crappie fisherman in the country but after watching the fishing machine, I'm now a self appointed crappie pro. grin

Caught 2 that were both right at this size. Are these about average or above average fish for crappie? Egg sacks are filling and they are feasting on 2" shad right now.

Above average. Congrats on 2 gooduns. I catch a decent amount of 14" crappie. Having said that, they're definitely good uns when they get that size, way, way over the "average" size. Guntersville will spoil you catching big crappie.

We caught 10-12 fish this year over 15" and probably 40 or so 14 or over. I measure and weigh every crappie I put in the boat. I also don't keep any under about 10 1/2" even though it's perfectly legal to do so. If folks keep 9" fish and are happy with them, then more power to them. Just not my cup of tea. Not enough meat to fool with for me. It would suit me fine if the state made Guntersville a trophy crappie lake like some in MS are and went to a 12" minimum size limit. The genetics and food is definitely there.

I hope you are prepared for your soon to come crucifixion. I mentioned a 10" limit once and I may as well have been clubbing baby fur seals at a ASPCA fundraiser.

A 10", 11", or 12" Crappie is far from a trophy but an average 10" Crappie should have about 1-1/2 the size fillet you get from an average 9" Crappie. I'm basing that off of a live weight chart. It only stands to reason that the fillet weights would result in a similar outcome. An 11" would almost double the 9" and a 12" would weigh more than 2-1/2 times the fillet weights from a 9" crappie. Of course it's much more accurate if you factor in circumferences, but I'm only talking about averages anyway. There will be exceptions. A fat 9" may actually weigh more than a skinny 10".

Where did you get that chart? I don't agree with the weights. I've caught several 15" crappie and I've never caught a 2 lb crappie.

I remember the sping of '07 over the coasrse of a bout a week.. me,daddy, an my brother caught 376 and they were all around 15in. I caught one black crappie that weighed 3lb,4oz..daddy caught a white crappie that weighed. 3lb,7oz. Mine was about 17in if i remember an i think daddys was a little over 18in. We caght the biggest crappie that year that id ever seen in my life. Havent caughtem consistently that bog in a long time. Weseveral times we filled the livewell...an had to throwem in the floor board of the boat. We started takin a 50gallon drum after that. That was a good year.

I wish I had scouted out Guntersville better before I hauled that tugboat of mine from Texas.

That’s a good thick crappie but being a white crappie I don’t see it weighing more than 1.75 lbs

I agree Fur. That's why I posted. Hes an above avg weight for that length and weighs very close to what the chart says is avg. A 15" white crappie at 2lbs would be a very fat and thick fish. At least I would think. I have pics of other 14" white crappie I've caught out of the pearl river that at I est to be about 1 lb. They are nowhere near as thick as this one. It's interesting that the chart estimates the black crappie to weigh more at a comparable length. The whites I catch are typically heavier than the black ones. Should the blacks really weigh more on avg than a white one at an equal length?

My wife caught (I believe world record) a crappie that weighed 4lb 13oz...They put it in the freezer and weighed it a month after she caught it..

I believe the world record is 5lb 2oz that still stands to date....

It was around 30 years ago when she caught it.. She caught it in a small lake off the Pascagoula river..

Red Creek taxidermy mounted it and showed it off for several years before they finally got it back...Now it's on her dad's wall...

One heck of a fish for sure....

JBL, where I primarily fish, Lake Guntersville and the Coosa River, either Weiss or Neely Henry, Black Crappie are heavier per length than White Crappie, 99.9% of the time. The build of the Black crappie lends itself to be heavier “per inch.” They are deeper bodied fish than white crappie.

tmhrmh, I’d love to see a picture of that fish

The black crappie world record was broken this year. A guy caught it in a pond in TN. I don’t remember the exact weight.
