Yup, 100%.

A few years ago I talked to the owner of this operation in reference to a guided hunt for my daughters graduation present. When we dicussed my expectations to his credit he suggested I take her to Texas. He was honest about thier operation in the fact that is is like most Alabama in thatit is hit or miss mainly goes with how good the rut is that year. So in this case at leasdt I would say he was honest and I just had to ask the right questions. Sorry about your bad experience but truthfully I would not go on any pay hunt in Alabama. JMHO though

To all you deer hunters, I know Tatum Creek and it sucks. We had terrible food unless you like Winn Dixie Fires and hush puppies, rolled chicken with canned green beans, and lousy stew! Let me tell you about my recent experience. Matt and his brother are running an operation that is a commercial catfish farm 12 months of the year. We had 13 people in 2 groups for more than 6 days and we had zero (0) legal bucks - during the rut. Most of us had seen a few does and a few small 4 or small 6 point with a 10 or 12 inch spreadm but nothing meeting the minimum. Here's why Matt Free is a jerk who is more interested in collecting $750 for each deer which is under 15". Of our group, he collected $750 from 6 people. I spoke with all of them and during the whole trip, they never saw a bigger deer. Matt talked with me only twice times during the whole trip - when I arrived to collect the balance, and when I shot a small four point also. The only time he was in camp was when his so called cguides called him to say someone had shot a small buck. Many of the photos posted are of deer which cost an additional $750 on top of the std rate of $1875. His guides suck also. He had three guides Ashley, Mike, and another guy. Ashley is an electrician and has never hunted or guided. He was hired to keep the aerators running on the catfish ponds. This place is a complete con. I am writing this because I am mad that i got taken and had a horrible first time experience on a farm in Alabama which has very, very few respectable deer. I expected a Trophy managed place as advertised with great hospitality, great food, and experienced guides. I want others to be aware of the money hungry, lying con men running this operation so that fellow deer hunters are not taken too.

I do know Billy as I met him for the first time at this place. He is not lying in his comments. Billy and I gain nothing from giving this forum our terrible experience on two con men running a scam, but we really do want to give others a chance to hear from actal guests. I wish I had this info before I spent more than $3400 with hunt costs, airfare, car rental, and an additional $750.

Long post, but I hope it helps any fellow deer hunter out there.

Rebelman, what are you talking about? Troll looking for advertising .... I know the guy who started this thread because I met him in camp. He surely is not advocating for this lousy place.

Take your kids hunting instead of hunting your kids.

I'd rather be LOST in the woods than FOUND in the city.

2. You were hunting some amazing land. There is not much better anywhere period. It is all about timing and being lucky. Right now alot of people in this area are getting frustrated because the weather has not encourged doe movement lately and the bucks are with the does. There have been a couple of good days, but overall it has been very hit and miss. You just didn't hit it at a lucky time, unfortunately. No matter how good it is in this area, it is still called hunting and not called shooting.

3. There is no excuse for a client to not feel like an outfitter and/or guide did not do all they could for the client to be happy. On the other hand I know from my good friends in the area who are outfitters/guides, there are some asses that you will never make happy no matter how hard you try. Just make sure you are not a person with unreasonable expectations before you negatively affect someones living. If they really didn't do all that was reasonable for you to see deer, eat well and be comfortable, then blast away.

4. Next year I would recommend the Morgan Academy Charity hunt. The land is just as good, the people are great, and it will cost you less money. I know all of us involved in it do all we can for the hunters to have a good experience and want them to come back. Plus it is for a good cause, namely the education of several Aldeer member's children.

Welcome to Aldeer!

Fine post. I was thinkin too about the season itself. The heat. The deer movement. Got friends who land is eat up with deer and the ain't seen much this season. And, when the local processors are slow... well it's a good indication that you might not see anything.

Although it's been good for me, I am a meat hunter on public land. When I git a doe or two for our family and a small buck or so for our daughters family, it's a fine year.

Sorry about yur bad experiance. Try Alabamas public land. Lot's of it. Mostly good people hunt it and IT'S FREE.

I know the owners of Tatum Creek, good guys! I dont hunt very far from them, it is a great piece of property! I do not know about the meals and lodging, never stayed there, but if you want a guaranteed kill of a big buck, then go to a high fence and spend the money! All of their place is free range, with some great deer on it! Its not like they can whistle and the SOB comes running right to you! My .02!

Why would you shot a deer knowing it was going to cost you extra and why would you shot a 4 point on a paid hunt? That is just dumb. Anyone who would spend that type money to hunt in Alabama is crazy. For that money you could have gone to a lot of other states to hunt. Heck, for $3,500 you could go kill you a deer in a fence, there you know you are going to see one.

Damn, 10Point, sounds like your group was too trigger happy to wait on a nicer buck.

I've never been to the place, but I know Matt and his wife and can't imagine them not giving you a great effort. Sometimes the deer don't cooperate, but you have to give them a chance to. CD.

Hello my name is Daryl Nitzschke, I want to let everyone know my name. I am not trying to hide who I am. I want to reply to what Billy wrote. I was also on this hunt that everone is talking about at Tatum Creek Hunting Camp. What 10 pointbucks and bigbuck 69 is saying is true. We never seen Matt unless he was their to collect money. We seen William every night because he was the cook. I know what everone is talking about that is why they call it hunting you are not always going to kill a deer, but you should see more deer or lets say bigger deer than the deer we saw. I saw 14 deer on this hunt and out of the 14 their were 8 bucks but no shooter bucks. The biggest one was a 6 point. Even if I had saw a buck that was as wide as his ears I was worried about shooting it because it being 14 7/8" wide and it costing me 750.00 more dollars. That don't make a fun hunt! I understand what they are trying to do but they are going about it in the wrong way. They need to high fence the place they call the Farm and really manage it, put guides with ever hunter that go an sit with the hunter and say you can shoot that deer or you can't. That way they are managed in the right way. Now Tatum also has other land that they lease, they should use this other land for people that come in that don't want a guide with them. Let them shoot 8 points and up and don't charge them if it is a 14 7/8" eight point. I sure people would be fine with paying more for the guided hunts but if they didn't they could hunt the other lease land they have. At least they know up front what the cost would be. I would have to say this wasn't a good hunt because of what all went on. I personally would not go back unless alot of changes were made. They even changed while we were their on the web site the size of deer that could be shot now it is 16" wide or a 125" deer. We were thier looking for 15" wide deer and did not see any out of six hunters that hunted for 3 days. Again my name is Daryl so outback you don't need use your moderator access to find out who I am and post it.
