Is it legal in Alabama on Natl Forest? Someone asked me this yesterday and I'm having a hard time finding it if it is in fact not legal.

I thought that was an old regulation.

I was written a ticket for said buckshot on a national forest,although it was in the 90's.Did the law change?

It must have. I always thought it wasnt but I guess it changed

· Muzzle-loaders and Black Powder Handguns--.40 caliber or larger, provided further it shall be illegal to possess other firearms while hunting with muzzleloaders during the special muzzleloader season.

· Long bows, compound bows, or crossbows.

· Handguns or pistols using centerfire, mushrooming ammunition.

WHEN AND WHERE STALK HUNTING ONLY IS ALLOWED �

· Same as above, except slugs or single round ball only may be used in shotguns.

I thought it was legal just not during the last 2 weeks of season

Got it from here http://www.alabamaadministrativecode.state.al.us/docs/2con.htm but I just noticed it was 2004-2005. I’m sure it changed now because the current reg doesn’t mention dog hunting so I assume your good to go with buckshot on open permit public land.

Call the Montgomery DCNR office at 334-242-3465 and ask for the Law Enforcement Section, and ask them to get the correct answer.

Below are the notes and regulations (current) pertaining to NF lands and legal arms and ammunition, which clearly says buckshot is legal. And even in areas where dog hunting is prohibited, there's no mention of buckshot at all. So it appears there's either a gross oversight, or they've removed the buckshot restrictions. That which is not illegal, by definition is legal.

SPECIAL EXCEPTIONS: If notes 1, 2 or 3 appear by the county listed,
see the special exceptions at the end of this chart. Note (1) relates
to dog deer hunting. Note (2) relates to U.S. Corp of Engineers
Lands. Note (3) relates to National Forest Service Lands.

(3) U. S. FOREST SERVICE (USFS) (same as open permit for county),
except Wildlife Mgmt. Areas – one deer per day.
Stalk Hunting Only- No Dogs (except for USFS Lands within Calhoun,
Clay & Talladega counties): Same season and dates as open permit-public

(a) It shall be unlawful to cast, release, or otherwise place, a dog, for the
purpose of hunting deer, from, upon, or onto, a public right-of-way,
without the permission of the landowners whose land adjoins the right-

(b) It shall be unlawful for any person to utilize a dog for the purpose of
deer hunting without the person placing and maintaining on said dog a
collar containing the following information clearly stated thereon: the
name, address, and telephone number of the person utilizing the dog.

And when you call them, (the forest service) they will tell you that they don't set the hunting regulations, the state does that. I've already been on that merry go round.

That’s what I figure. I’m not going to call because I don’t hunt NF and sure don’t use buckshot. I just wanted to see if the messenger contact method works. I’m sure they can’t/don’t answer all questions but I think it worked pretty well. Personally I think the social media approach is a good thing.
