We will be getting a chesapeake bay retriever pup in about a month and a half. I have trained labs in the past using the book Water Dog with success. I saw he has another book called Game Dog and was wondering if anyone who has used it would recommend it, or if anyone has found any other books they would recommend.

Water dog is a great book but the training methods are dated. Most of todays material is DVD. Mike Lardy's Total Retriever Training is probably the most popular. Even Graham also has a good program. The new up and comer is Bill Hillman. Be prepared for some sticker shock because none of it is cheap.

Im working with my first retriever and I took recommendations from some people and went with Bill Hillmanns train a retriever puppy. I am very pleased with it. It will carry you until you are ready to force fetch

Holy Bible! You may need some help with patience with a Chessie... grin

I used Chris Akin videos to train my Border Collie up to seasoned HRC.

Jerome Robinson also had a good book back in the day. You won't have to force fetch the Chessie...hell they won't give up anything...they think it's theirs. In all seriousness, they can be some kind of stubborn

Inspector are you in the local HRC club? If not, you should find them.

Bill hillmans pup video is a good one. I also like Freddy Kings videos on YouTube.

I'm not in the HRC I'm going to look into them. I think I'm gonna go with the Bill Hillman pup video, they are pricey but everyone talks great about them. I'm hoping ours won't be quite as stubborn we looked at a pile of breeders before picking this one. Thanks for all the input

Hillman has a bunch of good youtube videos if you want to see how the content will be presented. I have heard nothing but good things about Lardy’s videos, and I have used Chris Akins videos and like them. I tried watching smartworks from Evan Graham, but he just put me to sleep.
