Going the first time with a pack of beagles after deer season. Hunted a bunch of rabbits with one beagle but really looking forward to hunting with a pack of good rabbit only beagles. My chiropractor and his dad have 16 beagles. They are some sure nuff beautiful dawgs that you can tell are a bred bloodline. You can also tell they take good care of their dogs! https://imgur.com/a/o2Ox3u0

I had dogs all my life. No where to hunt anymore. Everyone is afraid your going to scare the deer. Good beagles don’t even run deer. SMH.🤦♂️ You have less than a month to rabbit hunt after deer season.

We've got a couple hundred acres of old grown up pasture and hardwoods that I'd let anyone with dogs come hunt after deer season as long as my dad and I get to come shoot too.

Everybody will let you hunt AFTER deer season. Its Sept 16 to Feb 10 is when you can't find anywhere to hunt. By the way rabbit season closes March 3.

A few years ago we had a 5 acre peice a guy would let us push. Bunch of fence rows and thick tree lines. Some swampy bottom and an acre inside a fence he never cut. 5-6 tall thorns. 4 guys would go after a hard freeze that beat down the broars some and we killed 14 in one afternoon. Another year killed 9. Those were some fun hunts, but guy sells land and all.I have is a memory.

we got so many rabbits I just sit in shooting houses about 45 minutes before dark and head shot em with subsonic .22. always wind up with 5 or 6. I'd imagine with as many rabbits as we have running dogs on it would probably be really productive. That sounds like a blast! haha

A lite fast action shotgun is in order. Rabbit's will be anywhere from 20 yards to 200 yards behind the dogs. A lot of that depends on how good they are. If the checks(when they loose the rabbit) are over 30 seconds, look for the rabbit to be further behind the dogs. Most beginners make the mistake of wanting to chase the dogs. Don't! Get where the dogs jumped and wait there, 99% of the time he'll circle back, unless he's been out whore hopping, and then he'll go back to his home range. With all the rain, rubber boots are in order. Your not going to hear the rabbit, keep your head on a swivel. Don't forget to lead the rabbit when you shoot, just like dove hunting. Just because you shoot, and he don't roll, doesn't mean he wont die. I shot all the guts out a swamper one time and he still run 30 yards. Your in for a good time, i'm jealous. 12 guys are a lot. Wear orange. Know where the other guys are. DON'T SHOOT THE MANS DOGS! Most important. Be safe, a rabbit ain't worth shooting someone over. I like high brass #6, more so to get thru thick brush. It doesn't take much to kill a rabbit. BTW, chaps or briar britches along with a jacket with gamebag, or vest is a must. Good luck. I want pictures.

Jealous x2. Nothing better than a good rabbit hunt. If the dogs are any count, you are in for a great time. Everything blumsden said. Most importantly, be mindful the other hunters and watch the dogs. They'll do all the hard work. Just make sure you shoot straight, and fast! Definitely post up pics!

The rabbit hunt was really cool.
But it was awfully hot. Due to work conflicts the guys only brought a pack of 6 dawgs (all female). We ran rabbits for about 4 hours saturday morning. Wow your right about being careful not to shoot dawgs. These were tiny almost minature beagles that could go into the thickest briars. We killed 7 rabbits with some running 3 circles before we got them. We probably ran 10 or more. After we killed a timber rattler and a moccasin around 1130 the dog owner was pretty much done as he had lost one of his dogs to a snake bite earlier in the season. Hence sorry about no photos as I was still learning to hunt when we stopped and we had planned to run the dogs all weekend (thought there would be plenty of time for pics) but it was to much risk for the dogs getting bitten. Were hoping that there is atleast one more cold spell by March 3rd and we will definitely run the beagles again... Done alot of hunting but watching and listening to the beagles run a rabbit is truly one of the coolest hunts I have ever done. was it adam acker that had the dogs?
We will burn that bridge when we get there

Good lord you have better everything hunting on your side of 5. We killed one last year and ran it 2 hrs before killing it. They did miss a few more.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

The dogs were owned by Albert Groce. I was a liitle confused as they referred to the big rabbits we were shooting as BUCKS. To me we always referred to rabbits as cottontails or swamp bucks / canecutters. Never new till I did some research that canecutters are cottontails. There are over 20 species of cottontails with canecutters being the largest. We were shooting full grown cottontails.. predomiately males in the upland area that all weighed about 3 pounds each. I never knew how much a big "cottontail" looks like a small canecutter. They definitely didnt look like peter cottontail. We always called a canecutter a buck and a cottontail a sage. Only way I know to tell the difference between a small buck and big sage is look for the black spot between the ears. The bucks, or canecutters, or swampers, whatever you want to call them always have black spot between their ears.
