Anyone ever used these for dying traps? I read online you could. I’m out of logwood dye and saw these on the side of the road on the way to church this morning. Thought I’d give it a try.

Should work. I left a bunch of pecan shells and hulls in a bucket the other day and they got wet. A couple days later when I poured them out they had stained the water black and the first thing I thought about was boiling some traps in there.

Anything like that should work fine. I know red oak leaves and bark will work also.

Results were pretty good. I needed a bigger pot because I was only able to dye 2 traps at a time since the walnuts took up so much space in the water. I finished and then put the traps that would fit in a bucket and poured the water over them. Gonna let them soak in it a day or 2 now. The water got really black. It smelled kinda like tea when it was boiling.

Used to string on a metal coat hanger, boil ours first in Red Devil lye so that they were clean...let dry a few minutes and put back in the pot with simmering hot black walnut water and wax. Let simmer 15 minutes and pul out and they are really dark brown not so much black.
we would boil the walnuts and then mash the skins off and dip out as much of it as we could first.

That's what I used earlier in my trapping career as we had and still a walnut tree at the farm house.

I caught fox, coon, and bobcats using that method of dye. Didn't have many coyotes then.

Just because it's easier and doesn't take as much time, I use the logwood dye now.

God Bless,
David B.
