With season so close it's time to fire up a new thread! Season opens Nov 3rd.

I haven't been able to run traps for the past 2 seasons but it's time to get back into the game. Matter of fact I've been back at it since Saturday. Caught 4 coyotes and a coon the past 4 nights. I'll be updating every day but here are pics of the recent catches.

Atta boy Hank, glad to see you back catching them. I put out 3 sets today to try and catch a calf harassing coyote.

The first one and fourth one are from the same set 2 days apart and the one from this morning was from less than 50 yards away. All 3 were within 100 yards of the lady's house I'm trapping for. She's had several cats go missing recently and last week her grand daughters little dog went missing.

Think I might've found the culprits!.....

Had a big male coyote this morning. Biggest one I've ever caught. 37.5lbs on my scales. Biggest one before this morning was 34lbs.

Nice one, I hope to get some set back out tomorrow. The rain ruined the sets that I had out.

Got some pretty cool video of a couple of coyotes visiting a mock dirt hole that I put a camera on. One that worked the dirt hole almost had his entire head in the hole at one point. I set his up just to see what kind of activity I would get, this area does not produce a lot of visible sign.

I didn't have anything this morning but 2 sets worked that I didn't rework after the rain this past week. Nothing but pure laziness on my part.

Made a couple more sets here at home since I pulled my bounty line yesterday.

Found some great sign this morning while riding around on our club. Coons are hitting our chufa patches hard so I'll be after them next week.

Yep, got some on camera recently that need to go. We've taken right at 120 coons/possum in the immediate area in just over a year but still have plenty to go. It has made a difference in the turkey population by doing so.

Caught another female in the remake from yesterday. I believe this might be the calf harasser, she was blind in one eye and probably looking for an easy meal.

Another coyote this morning! Waiting for the rest of the rain bands to pass through so I can go dig out mud and reset. Thankfully I've got a tote full of dry dirt and Pete Moss on the truck.

Good job Hank.

I had another one this morning. After all the rain yesterday, I didn’t figure any of the sets would catch.

You're tough on em Matt!

I remade a couple of my sets yesterday afternoon behind the rain expecting a big night with this cold front moving through but didn't have anything this morning. Deer moved pretty good yesterday afternoon so I figured predators would also but no luck. Lol!

I’ve had a coyote under the persimmon trees beside my driveway the last 2 nights when I got home. Think I’m gonna set a trap this evening after work.

Nothing! My line has kind of gone dead. Amanda's been checking them this weekend while I'm at work. I'll reset these and add coon traps tomorrow. Got a small coyote job to set tomorrow and a beaver job.

Know the feeling, only have a couple out and some DP's. Did manage one coon this morning. Trying to decide whether to add more, pull everything or leave as is. Slow is an understatement

I pulled today because of the weather forecast but really wish I would've reset and rebaited. Will probably set a few tomorrow to run the rest of this week.

I really need to get some traps cleaned up, dyed and waxed. Got another call today for coyote trapping.

I'm working the next three nights and then days next week. Maybe I can get everything cleaned up and ready to set again by next Friday.

#5 It was a dirt hole remake that I turned into a compass set after the first coyote tore all my backing down.[Linked Image]

Looks like I have another one to trap. Also, there was some kind of wound on the one I caught around it’s neck area.

Finally connected after about a week. Did add a coon and a possum yesterday plus another couple of possums earlier in the week. Thats 49 nest predators since the end of turkey season.

There's not a lot of coyotes in this area, I think most are just to my north and east where there's a large cattle operation plus some row cropping.

Can't keep the pigs out of coyote sets LOL. Down to 1 working set but plan on remakes this afternoon. Also had a coon to make #50 on the egg eaters since the end of turkey season.

How many you want ? I don't care for it. As long as boston butts are relatively cheap, thats where I'll get my pork. It all stems from a shoat gut shot by a relative I had to clean a LONG time ago. Had a wad of tapeworm as big as a football. The more I chew the bigger it gets when trying wild pork.

Good catch K! The t-bone is one of my favorite sets.

I was going to dye and wax mine today but since the rain seems to be set in I think me and mama are going to go shotgun shopping for her.

Thanks, big male for a grey. Had another fox dig at tut he edge of a trap at a dirthole set. Caught this one on another Tbone. Converted it to a dirt hole on the remake.

Got a half dozen K9 Extremes in. What a trap! Cant wait to see them catch

Cool catch there. Reds are especially rare here too. I'd have to think real hard about dispatching a Red unless I was going to take it to the taxidermist.

Definitely not many reds left! Greys can climb to escape the coyotes but reds can't so they don't last long unless they get real smart around them.

I've caught fewer and fewer reds every year as our coyote population increased.

Kind of interesting that with regular trapping our rabbit and quail population have increased with the deer and turkeys but the red fox haven't bounced back as well.

I did not know that about the greys. That's interesting. I rarely see a red on our place anymore. Maybe every other year I'll get 1 on camera passing through. We have a few resident greys I see regularly though. I figure if I get a fox in my trap the yotes will have it eat up before daylight. That's what they do with my coons anyways.

Yep, I have never had anything get a coon in one of my traps yet. Did have something eat a possum once and left nothing but the foot.

The only thing I've ever had eaten out of a trap was a turkey. Had one get caught one day and the next mornings check told a gruesome tell. Coyotes pulled the turkey and I followed out into the planted pines where they drug her.

The crime scene where the turkey was caught. A flat set on the inside bend of a three way intersection that was loaded with coyote tracks.

[Linked Image]

I believe in setting heavy on sign so I had 2 sets in the intersection. This fella was right across the road from the crime scene. He just looked guilty to me! Lol!

What is the procedure for getting a bobcat tag? Seems like you should be able to call, give sex and size measurements for tag to be mailed?

I just call and give my trapping license number and the date it was caught, and they mail me the tag.

Lots of red in that one Matt! Big coyote for sure.

I've still got my one trap set where I caught the grey the other morning and I made 3 sets for beaver today. Last night at work tonight.

2 grinners and 1 coon this morning. Not much to show. I set a dozen coyote traps today. Maybe critters will stir tonight with the front moving through.

Pretty strange that we just talked about this a week or so ago!

I pulled up to one of my dp traps this morning to find it covered with leaves and debris. As soon as I saw it my first though was I'd caught a possum and a cat had killed and eaten it.

You can see the trap between the two trees partially covered.

[Linked Image]

Surprise, surprise! Guess there really is a first time for everything. I don't know what caused the cat to decide coon was on the menu last night but he dang sure messed up my $10!

Keep on killing 'em!

This tract I'm working on is adjacent to our place. The 17 egg eaters taken so far off this tract brings us up to 76 since May 1st. Our goal was 100 but we're likely going to bust that wide open.

That is a big cat. I had a cat step everywhere but on the pan night before last. His days are numbered if he sticks around.

You guys keep up the good work. I haven't set a trap this season. Living vicariously through y'all. I did love the doubled up fox. You caught everything but his pecker and tongue on that set.

Basically what Im doing to include feathers. Tee intersection with thinned pines adjacent to natural regen cutover 5+ years old, it's thick!

Same here. Just about everywhere in South Alabama is planted pines now.

This year there definitely seem to be an abundance of cats. Just the few sets I've had out so far have produced 5 cats and only 9 coyotes. That's an unusually high number of cats.

This full moon is a killer on trapping! Predators like dark nights. I've got 28 sets out that are every one in prime spots and you see what I've caught this week.

I'm going to pull all of mine Sunday and start fresh in a couple weeks. Work schedule is tough through the holidays but should slow down by February.

Grandslam you and Velvet tines give me a shout when y'all are up this way. Merry Christmas!

Managed 1 half grown coon but that makes 82 egg eating SOB's off of a 4000 acre block of properties since May 1st.
No coyote sign since the last rain on the block I'm currently working.

I know where you're talking about Grandslam! You need some really long timbers. I wonder if you could buy poles and use them? I know it would work for 4wheelers.

We are considering all our options at this time Hank. I’ve thought of poles, but hate to see it turn into a raft during high water. Still got my thinking cap on.

Yeah, I don't know how high the water gets there. Could be an option though if it's anchored down. Go up in the summer when it's dry and concrete several 4x4's down on each side the length of the poles and attach them. Would serve as anchors as well as support.

I've got to build 3 on my place so I've been kicking around options also.

Probably overkill and not cost effective in your situation. A railcar is probably a better option depending on the length of the span. Cheapest would be a low water rock crossing depending on normal depth.

I'll sell you some culverts...

#5 from this set!

[Linked Image]

That's 4 greys and a red caught in this set in just under 2 weeks.

The remake. Nothing fancy, a dirt hole with a few feathers.

I was going to pull mine but I guess I'm holding out for another catch. I have to pull them Thursday no matter what and can't set anything else for at least a week.

Tough runs working 1pm to 5am. Lol! Gotta love it!

No catch pic, but this girl was 15#. I decided to go ahead and flesh some fur while I was off today and tomorrow. Got the otter done tonight, and will get a coyote and red fox fleshed tomorrow. No more traps set for me right now with all the rain and mud.

Cleaned up a bunch traps today and I'll be making a few repairs and tuning on some tomorrow. Might try to set a few if the mud isn't too deep.

Another pair of beaver on today's check. That big female weighed 70 lbs on the landowners deer scales. They plan on having it mounted.

Really like those big Bridger 5's for drowning setups.

This is the only pic I have of it. Doesn't really do justice to size but I was probably pushing 250lbs in the pic.

Can any of yall offer up some books, websites or videos for a complete novice to use to learn? I would be mainly going for beavers and coyotes.

Did not see a thread in this forum for it. Maybe yall could do one like CNC has in the management forum.

Thanks

YouTube is your friend! I've got dozens of books, VHS tapes and DVDs on trapping but there's so much content on YouTube now that it really doesn't make sense to buy stuff.

Management Advantage videos are great, Clint Locklear's Predator Nation videos, coon creek outdoors and many, many others will really shorten the learning curve.

Beaver trapping videos by Mr. Kirk DeKalb are great and Tom Florin videos are really good.

No idea how accurate the Landowners scales are, I have to take him for what he said. I do know that it was much heavier than a bag of feed.

K Bush I wasn't saying yours didn't weight 70lbs. I know areas produce much heavier animals. Heck I've seen several posted on T-man pushing 100lbs.

Beavers may be like our deer, heaviest I've ever killed here was 165lbs but I know Clarke and Choctaw Co consistently produce 200lb deer.

Thanks, Looks like Ill be taking my headphones and Ipad to the stand tomorrow. rofl

One last question, where are the best places to buy the traps, lures etc?

Minnesota trapline is where I get most of my stuff. I have also used FnT trading post and PCS outdoors.

I use F and T post and Minnesota Trapline. Both are really fast getting orders out.

If you're going to buy coyote traps and want them ready to go in the ground go to NO BS Lures and order from Kendall. His K9 extremes are already set up, powder coated and ready to go in the ground.

This mornings tailgate shot! 2 beaver, a coon and a possum. I've got a fox in a trap I've gotta go get out that hunters just called me about.

Nice. Last several checks show 0 activity so I'm probably pulling my beaver traps tomorrow. Walked a good bit of the pond and saw no fresh sign after yesterday's rain. Did catch a whiff of castor but never found it. Opened some more dams and let water out.

Will follow up in a couple of weeks

Possum and a coon yesterday, three possum today. Nothing fancy but it's better than not having traps set. Hopefully got some beaver jobs coming up in the next couple of weeks.

No pics but added 2 more beavers this afternoon. One was an absolute pig. I've got to set a job Saturday and I'll try to update with pics but I'll be running at night after work on an 80 acre lake so nothing guaranteed.

I may try to set a few coyote traps next week if I can get traps dyed and waxed.

North40R- Just curious. Are you RE-dying your traps, or are these ones that you haven't previously been using this season? I've wondered if traps that have been in the ground for a while need to be re-dyed from time to time or is just at the beginning of the season adequate. Thanks.

They'll start to rust after they've been in the ground a while. Especially the ones that have caught. So yes I re-dye and re-wax mine several times a season.

Set up on the 400 acres adjoining the tract I've been trapping all week. Flat set with gland lure paid off with a first night catch. Ended the day with 2 coons 2 possum and a coyote. One coon was on our place just outside of town and didn't make the picture.

Keep stacking them up Kbush! I'm dragging this year. I've caught 4 beaver the past couple days and set a dozen traps on another lake yesterday.

Nice work on the catches. How big is the beaver colony you're working on Hank?

Kbush I have no clue. One pond I have set up is only maybe 3 acres with a smaller 1 acre pond overflowing into it. I've caught 6 out of it so far and they rebuilt the small dam break last night so I know there's at least one more there.

The other job is an 80+ acre lake with a large creek and several small feeder streams coming into it. I caught three out of it the first night and I'm sure there are plenty more beaver and several otters in it. I've trapped this lake several times and it's more maintenance trapping than eradication. Too many ins and outs on it and a constant supply of fresh critters.

👍 that's what I'm trying to get a better handle on, estimating what's there. But as long as they don't repair the dams, it's good. I agree some places will always hold beaver.

It was dirthole set for coyotes. I had seen very little cat sign around the area and was I completely surprised to see a cat in that set.
I've got several cubby hole set on another property where ive seen some cat sign but no catches yet.
Got 2 coons and coyote this AM

That's kind of been my luck, put in a flashy hole set with feathers and catch a coyote or coon. Last cat I caught was on a urine post on burnt wood. Place I'm trapping has several on camera. The roads and fields are not conducive for finding tracks ao it's hard to put a blind trail set in.

Took the beaver carcass from last week and staked it down in a cubby. Lured with cat gland but this little gyp coyote got there first.

I haven’t had any traps set in almost 2 months, but I did tan a few pelts the last couple weeks. I am going to keep the fox, but the rest will be for sale in the classifieds.

Been a tough week with blow out rains and a lot of activity on this property. Camera sightings went to zero midweek last week.

Glad to pick up this young female. [Linked Image]

Nice catch. I've bagged a few the last couple of weeks but the hot dry weather was making it tough to keep sets working. Hopefully that is changing.
