Claybird checking in.

Mww460 - as long as you are having a good time enjoying Gods creation....that's contribution enough. Your passions you will pass down and teach. Safe hunting and I hope we burn'em down!

Howdy, checking in. Saw 9 today, none in range. Great observation day. Should be a good season.

Checking in as well. I don’t care what the team name is. Where’s everybody hunting this year and what should we expect? My place is about 30 minutes outside of Auburn and we are expecting a really good year. I’ll have no problem contributing a doe and I’m usually good for a buck or two as well. Just gotta hope the right ones show up.

I hunt the Jefferson co Tuscaloosa co line. I've done zero scouting or put out one camera so kinda going in blind but the property holds lots of deer and we usually kill a couple good ones every year

Not really good with the whole name picking thing so I'm good with whatever

This will be my second full season hunting. I hunt public land (Wheeler Wildlife Refuge and Bankhead) and I am currently 0/3 with the bow (still trying to get that first one). I did a lot of scouting including cameras so this should be the year.

Finally got a chance to sit on the toilet at work and get on the ole ALdeer. I hunt both around Huntsville and Auburn on the holidays to see family. So if our land and lease get slow then I know at least 2 of y'all I can call on. Seen a doe and a spike this year so far. Hoping for a big year on a new lease. Good luck. And I think JD was on the team last year. As for team name. it may be long but what about " I'm not gay, but $20 is $20."

Yep we were teammates last year as well Auwrestler. If I remember correctly, you were gonna hunt with me over thanksgiving but your wife was creeped out about you meeting people online haha. Good luck to you this year, I know you bought a little bit of land and i hope it produces. If not, we can try again to get together over the holidays, I’ve got 10-12 shooters on camera already so I’m expecting big things this season

Just watched 10 deer cross the creek about 100 yards from where I’m at. I’ve never seen so many deer together since I’ve hunted wheeler. Very excited.

Nice! Congrats and yes we do get points. You’ve just gotta take a picture of yourself with the deer. As far as adding pics, I think imgur is the way to go. Just create an account there and upload your picture. Then there should be an option to copy a direct link, so do that. Come to ALdeer and whenever you type out your post, click on one of those little boxes and paste that direct link you copied.

If all this is too confusing, PM me your number and I’ll post for you haha

Sounds like it was a good morning. Hope you get to sling an arrow soon. I’m ready to hit the woods, but we are buck only for the first 10 days so it’ll be something big or bust for me

Well i really screwed that one up. I read the rules when I put my name in the pot but apparently not well enough. Didn't realize this morning that you either had to be in the pic or have a legible note with name and date. Oh well

Next time mmw, just carry a pen or Sharpie with you. Write your aldeer name, date, and doe, write it on anything where it is legible in the pic. I don't care if you write it or spray paint it on the doe. Don't feel bad though, I wasted 5 points last year myself. My niece had her skinned and deboned in Indiana before I realized that I was in this contest. Happens like that sometimes.

Nice! Always good to see some bucks on camera. Gives you a little confidence when you head to the stand too. That buck in the second to last picture looks like a sho nuff good one

Lots of islands that you can walk too. What time of the day would you hunt these? Really early in the morning? I’m thinking getting in there a hour or so before daylight and try to catch them coming back to the island?

And I’d shoot any of them, but it would be nice to get that biggun.

And all of these bucks walked through right behind the other. It makes me think they’re still grouped up together.

Don't forget the team name in the pic. With work it may be gun season before I can hunt. Good luck fellas.

There’s really no telling what time they will be where without sitting and watching or setting up cameras. What I would do if it were me, I’d walk the edge of the mud looking for spots where they seem to be crossing or where the most tracks are. That will get you in the right spot. Then I’d either put a camera there or if I planned on hunting that day or the next day I’d just sit there and watch for myself. See what Happens. Nothing will tell you more than time spent in the woods

Going tomorrow pm. Part of me wants to try the lease. Other part wants to try some new public ground. Just hoping to see some movement with the cold weather.

Well I was hoping a lot of folks would lay em down this weekend. Haven't heard of many being killed around here. I'm headed to Selma Tuesday and plan on staying till I get rained out later in the week. I'm officially out of deer meat. Best of luck to yall.

I killed a big boar this afternoon, doesn’t get us any points but it still felt good to sling an arrow. Saw a bunch of deer this afternoon too but the only ones in range were does and we are buck only for the first 10 days. Those does better watch out next time!

Thanks. I was after this guy but he didn’t show up. Being surrounded by pigs probably didn’t help any

Man, you got pigs around Auburn. Never seen one. I'm going this pm trying to decide on staying close to river where I have off and on pictures or going part way up the mountain to hunt a funnel I've never seen before. But have had pictures of bucks coming from there and had a fawn go out of it's way to go up the mountain in that direction.

Getting down in 10 minutes. Stuck a coyote and think the bastard ran off with my arrow. But seen 4 does just passed too high above me. Heard turkeys and shot a coyote. It's a good day. Now for some grub..

Nope, found my arrow. Had meat and blood on arrow and he yelped and tore out of there. I looked a little, but figured he died off somewhere. Just glad to get a fawn/turkey killer gone or at least slowed up. I'll take a shot at everyone I see.

This is my first year competing but here is what another guy said on another team. I'm getting 108 but nonetheless that would be no small feat.

You get an extra 5 bonus points if everyone on the team has a doe kill so thats were the 113 comes in.
I'll definitely get another doe before its over, now the 8 point on the other hand not sure sure

5 for a doe + 5 for a deer + 8 = 18
18 x 6 team members = 108?

What am i missing?

"5 Bonus points will be awarded to each team where each member kills and enters a doe."

If everyone on the team kills and enters a doe than the team as a whole gets 5 extra points on top of whatever points you already have

Deer spook all the time. If it didn't blow the whole woods up something could easily walk by. Good luck!

Hunting a new spot tomorrow morning on wheeler. It's a 1.5 mile bike in. I'm pumped. Who all is hunting in the morning?

Won’t be hunting tomorrow, but hoping to get out there Sunday. Good luck in the morning, the deer should be moving

One of my best spots on public land is 2.5 miles from the parking area. Next time I go in there I'm taking a bike. There's a buck in there rubbing trees the size of my leg so it is worth it to get in there. If we have a lot of rain, I'm going to need my chest waders to get back there. The things we do for big bucks.

Had a button buck walk all around me and some Turkey's this pm. This am had a solid black coyote walk in my land. I drew and squeeked. He didn't wait long enough for a shot and ran out. I would habe had him tanned. Looked like a wolf.

I know where two of them black bastages live. One here in LA, and one in Selma. Hope you get him. My uncle has been a taxidermist all his life but he won't touch a coyote. He says they stink too bad.

I'm on nights this week but I am itching to go hunting. Should I get out in the woods this morning after work 8-12pm or this afternoon 2:30-dark today? Decisions

Saw 5 does and a little basket rack, but nothing to shoot. I was in a spot where I’ve got a giant on camera, so it was a go big or go home afternoon for me. I Let the does walk but big boy never showed up.

I did do a little scouting early in the afternoon and found some good stuff. Its only a matter of time til I get us a good one. Shooting a doe will be no problem. Just hoping one of the good bucks slips up soon.

Jumped multiple in the dark on the way in. No deer in stand. Wind felt like I was gonna blow out the tree. Got down and scouted top of the mountain and found a bench with whiteoaks every 50-100 yards. Deer turds everywhere. Gonna get a stand up there soon and then get em one afternoon. But I did find some mushrooms, hopefully can learn to cook them or I'll sell them to anyone that knows what they are doing.

I don’t know anything about mushrooms, but if you’ve got a bench with white oaks dropping good, I’d hunt it as much as you can right now before they get gone. Get in there tight on them with a wind blowing perpendicular to that bench and it should be money.

Haven't been in the woods much lately. Went last Tuesday afternoon and had two does walk by at 15 yards could have easily shot either but heard something behind them that ended up being a small 4 point. Will be hitting it hard Wed and Thursday.

So happy for my dad. Killed his first deer in years and first with a crossbow. All on the food plot we made this summer.

Well kinda long story. I went out yesterday morning, to some public land I just started hunting, after the storms hoping they would be moving. Saw 6 on the drive in, so I felt pretty good about seeing something. I crossed the creek which was up to my knee. Since it had stormed earlier I wasn’t concerned just irritated that my feet were soaked but I was only going in 500 yards. So I get set up and at daylight a couple turkeys fly down. About 730 I can hear something crossing the creek, or I thought I heard something crossing the creek. The noise kept going for the next hour. I kept noticing black object about 150 yards away by the creek moving around. I got my binos to see and noticed the water was moving fast. Much faster that what I recall cross and watched a log zip down the creek. Slightly alarmed I started packing my stuff up around 9. I made it to the creek about 920 and saw it was really high but since I didn’t cross that spot coming in I decided to walk back to the crossing. Before I could make it back I could see the water in the road, that’s when I knew I was in trouble. I got to a spot I crossed that morning in the road where the water was at my ankles, it was now at my knees. My concern was really starting to grow. I didn’t have cell service where I was. I pulled up HuntStand and found a spot I thought I could cross and started there. To cut the story down, I ended up checking 4 spots I thought I could cross before finding a spot. I had to walk though a guys cow pasture to get to his bridge. I was super relived at this point. When I finally made it back to my truck it was 218 and my tracker said I had done 9 miles. Lesson learned on this trip, don’t hunt after heavy rains

I got straight up lost in Tuskegee NF once. Walked in to a new area, hunted till dark. Started walking out and got turned around. About 10 minutes into trying to walk and find the trail I walked in on my headlamp went out. So I'm lost in the dark. I found the north star and started heading north knowing I would hit a road eventually. I did after about 5 miles in the dark with my summit and bow in hand. I'm glad I didn't kill a deer that night.

So the nice bench with all the whiteoaks and deer sign I found Sunday and planned on hunting Friday am. Is currently being hunted by my dad's friends after my dad told him about it. Drives me up the wall that I found it and now he is hunting it first. Should be common respect to let the guy that found a spot hunt it at least once before you barg in there.

Haha man thats aggravating, but you learned a valuable lesson. Been there done that. I love my family to death and I hope they kill some good deer, but if I find something I really like I’m not gonna go talking it up to anyone.

I’ll be down at my place for most of the weekend. Hoping to get on the board with a deer. Pigs don’t do us much good as far as points go.

Good news, other guy didn't even see a deer. But from what he described he wasn't high enough on the mountain either. So they better be looking up on Monday. My trigger finger is getting itchy

Hopefully you’ll do some good on Monday!

gcr, I hate you didn’t find your doe. It’s tough with a bow, I think we’ve all been there before.

As for me, i got skunked yesterday afternoon. Slept in this morning.

Saw 22 this afternoon. Had A couple good bucks between 60 and 100 yards, but none in range. I’ll be back out there in the morning

Snick in this am before church. Went to the whiteoaks I found last week. Had to leave at 800 and at 745 had 5 does come in. First doe pick ked me out got everyone nervous. Had a fast shot on her and thought I missed as she trotted off. None knew what to do so 2 came closer to me and I let out another arrow after letting her get out from a tree. Hit a limb and missed. She walked off farther past where I had ranged earlier and I let another arrow fly but mossjudged and was low. So going back to first shot. I went to get my arrow and had one drop of blood. I walked down the trail she left on and after about 30 yards started getting more and more to the point where I could see double hand size splatters on the ground and could see the blood trail up the mountain. We are about to leave for church so I backed out and will be going back to look for her after church. I'm worried about my shooting. Had a really hard time seeing through the peep. Honestly may swap to a crossbow. Can't wait till guns season starts. Thanks guys.

Good luck finding her. It’s encouraging that you were finding more blood the further you went instead of less. If she acted like you missed and then just trotted off, then you either barely scratched her or smoked her. With a clean double lung shot, sometimes they just kinda trot off like they don’t know what happened and then fall over. If you had hit shoulder or guts you would have seen a reaction out of her.

I only saw a couple does this morning, so I’m headed home empty handed. Hoping to be back out there next weekend and get another chance at the stud I saw yesterday afternoon.

Didn't find her and so pissed that I can't shoot a dang bow, it is now in Classifieds. Gonna swap to crossbow next year. With a crossbow less chance of me missing and my kid can shoot it too.

Only downside to the crossbow is you have turn in your man card when you buy one. I did hear some of the newer ones come with a couple free arrows and a box of tampons though!

In all seriousness, I hate you didn’t find her. Bow hunting is tough. I’ve lost or missed more than my fair share. Just gotta keep practicing and getting experience in the field. I enjoy the challenge.

The joy of success does not outweigh the agony of defeat. I want to kill deer. How it's done doesn't matter. It's hard enough seeing the dang things. And I make regular tampon runs anyways.

AU, I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. Had some of the best bubbly looking blood you could have hoped for. From what Google earth says, after .68 miles, I gave him up. Never lost the blood but it was getting pretty thin and he ran off the property to a place not even God is allowed to set foot on.

We still have time to catch up. Looks like we are in about a 5 or 6 way tie for last with 0 points.

gcr, thats a good deer your buddy killed. I hope you get one this weekend while you are over there.

Don't sweat the points this early in the season. We've still got 3 months of hunting left. Everybody just needs to make sure they get a doe this year and that will get us 35 points (5 points each + 5 point bonus). And you know some of us will put a buck on the ground, so we should end up with plenty of points if everybody will shoot something this year. You know they say big dogs walk late. We're just giving everybody else a head start.

I'll be buck hunting the next few weeks, but I plan on shooting 2 or 3 does in December and then switching back to bucks only for the last month or two of the season.

Good luck in Georgia. I have seen more deer already than in the last 2 seasons. I'm gonna be down in Auburn hunting for the holidays and give my land a 2 week break. Also with gun season starting, I'm hoping it will drive some of the public land deer to us. Excited about gun season. I have never killed more than 2 deer in a season and if can stop missing then I should be able to set a PR.

Yea I'm not stressing the points, just enjoy competing. I got my shift covered for tomorrow so I am going to hunt wheeler in the morning before heading to GA for the weekend. Maybe I'll get that pesky doe that I didn't kill last weekend.
AUwrestler do you hunt public or private around Auburn?

Good luck to everyone this weekend

I usually hunt with my buddy on his family land, but if he can't go during the week I'm there I will try my luck on Tuskegee. Hunted the NF alot in college.

You’ve had a good year already then. Seeing a bunch and getting chances is all you can ask for. I’m sure you will kill a few deer before the season is out. I hope you get that new PR.

You are still welcome to come hunt with me if we can get the timing to work out. I know your wife thought it was weird last year and I can understand that, but you are more than welcome to come

Hey guys, don't know what you have around your place. But bother deer I killed had a pile with acorns. The buck had whole whiteoaks in his stomach. Didn't even chew. Good luck.

Saw 12 this afternoon and several decent little bucks. But the big boys never showed up. Better luck next time I hope.

Yep. Like cow would. But more often than not, I’ve seen them chewin and crunching on em while they eat. Cool that you got to see the whole ones though. You gonna mount that buck? He looked like a goodun

Gonna get a euro mount on him. He is a main frame ten with matching kickers on both G2's. I'm guessing 3.5 years old. But guess my points are done for the team, hope for a couple more does and then get lucky again in January. Thanks guys.

idk about a cud but they'll regurgitate them, I was in Illinois several years ago bowhunting, and the little knob I was settin on was just perfect for them to bed down on in the sun about mid morning seemed like, cause it happened a couple times that hunt, anyway, I had 3 big ol nannies bed down below me about 60 yds one morning and after a couple hrs in the sun one of thems eyes started getting heavy and her head started bobbin ( you know like when your in a boring meeting ) and directly I had to stop watching her cause she was making me sleepy too smile well I started watching the other 2 and one of them started licking her lips like crazy and after a few minutes she starts spitting stuff out of her mouth....WTH is that?... about that time the other one with her head up starts jerking it around and she see's something and stands up which alerts the other ones and they all start looking and standing.....You guessed it...Here comes Mufassa.... shocked He walked up and run his ol nose out sniffin on them does and they got all giddy and jumpin around and I just knew I was fixin to get a shot...well to make a long story short, they didn't smell good enough to do anything with and just as quick as he walked in my life he walked out....he had more points than I could count out of my bino;s... cry so I made it a freakin point when I got down to see what she was spitting out of her mouth and it was red oak hulls.... slap I never thought about them them doing that, even though I've killed a ton of them with whole acorns in them....Anyway Congrats on your buck AU... thumbup

You know that makes perfect sense to me now that you say that. In areas where deer bed, I have found crushed hulls of acorns scattered about. Didn't ever realize what it was until I read your post just now. It makes perfect sense. They can't digest it. You don't see it in their scat. It has to come out one end or the other.

No luck in GA guys, seems like the rut was over when I got there. Saw a nice 8 pt at about 40 yards in some cover making a scrape, grunt called him a little closer but never had a clear shot. Next evening I grunt called a would be 8pt who was missing half his rack. I was given permission to shoot him but decided not to (these guys are pretty serious about acceptable deer that can be taken so not taken him goes a long way). Watched some young bucks fight and saw a ton of pigs. All and all a great weekend but I didn’t bring it home. My buddy did kill his first buck with his bow though. It was a smaller 8pt but still a great deer.

AU congrats on those kills, that buck is a beast.

Congrats Hoss

Been having a hard time putting my bow down but think its time to dust off the 308 and 45/70 and give them a try

Going to a buddies land in Auburn tomorrow morning. Really hoping for a big doe. But wouldn't turn down a bug buck.

Well guys, I lost my grandad to cancer on Wednesday. It’s been a rough past few months and I haven’t hunted much because Ive been spending most of my spare time hanging out with him. I killed my first deer sitting in his lap when I was 7 years old and he taught me everything I know about the outdoors. Our farm was his pride and joy and I will always have him to thank for buying that land for us. I’m headed out there now, I hope he sends me a deer this afternoon. I know he’ll be trying to. Here he is with one of his last good bucks

So sorry to hear about your granddad. I know he meant alot to you. And like you said he left a legacy for his family which is what we are supposed to do. Sounds like a great man. Good luck hunting and remembering him while in the stand. Hope a booner walks by.

I see your grandad rocking the woodsmaster in the pic. That's all my grandad ever hunted with and because of that they are absolutely my all time favorite rifle. Own 4 of them and everytime I see them in the safe I think of him

Its a sweet gun. Semi-auto .243. Pretty much the only gun I remember my grandad hunting with, no telling how many deer he killed with it. I know he killed 201 bucks in his life, cause he kept a log of every deer he ever killed. Pretty sure he was somewhere in the 400s with total deer.

Taking a week off hunting. With the warm weather and rain. Might go tomorrow and add corn to feed station and check the lowest 2 cameras. With all the rain. I might go ahead and move a stand. Really like using climbers and leaving them on the tree with a life line next to it.

I hate a weather man. Been seeing 100% rain all week.for Saturday morning. And now it looks like it will hold off till lunch. Too bad I already volunteered to run errands for the wife in the am. Maybe I'll get out there around 9 and jump something while I'm marking trails.

Well I got out there and got my main trail up the mountain cut out better and marked with bright eye tacks. Also made a scrape and peed in it. Gonna stay off the land till second weekend of January and then hunt hard till end of season. Found fresh rubs, droppings and turkey sign.

Same thing happened to me but I got out there today in the rain anyway. Saw four does feed for about 15 minutes before they started walking towards me. It turned out to be six does and I was covered up. Head doe spotted me once she was under my stand, trotted off to 12 yards and stopped. I shot and missed. 2 of them came back within eye distance but not close enough for the bow. Still struggling trying to break this curse

That’s awesome. You may kill a lot of bigger deer in the years to come, but it’s tough to top that feeling of when you kill your first one. Congrats man.

Got the doe. She’s a lot smaller than I thought, but I won’t waste any meat. Shot her left lung at 5 yards at about a 45 deg angle from above. She was facing away. She only ran 50 yards.

Hunting is just getting good. Still taking some me time off. Might hunt weekend after Christmas, but not on the lease.

Nothing has worked the way I have planned it here recently. I am taking off tomorrow and driving my grandmother to Selmalia for Christmas with our kinfolk. As soon as I drop her off, I'm headed to a spot I have been saving all year if the wind is right. After this one or two day hunt, looks like it will be 2019 before I can hit the woods again.

With all the rain we are getting I thing the GW can write everyone a ticket for hunting in a water way. If I was hunting this weekend I would really worry about getting stuck.

Oh yea. Solid start and the best hunting is still ahead. I pretty much sat out December, so I’m ready to go in January.

Didn’t shoot but had a good day yesterday. Things are definitely heating up and they should be chasing soon. I saw 23 deer yesterday and a lot of young bucks messing with does. The biggun just hasn’t shown up yet this year.

Got a hunt on my anniversary and didn't see any deer. But as I was about to climb down I heard the craziest sound like a mix between and heron and a bark. Then a grey fix came cruising up by me. I squeeked and stopped him. A 30-06 will straight up gut a fix for you. Happy to have a predator gone. Cute little things though.

Sat from sunup till 1130 and then crawled my way through some thick stuff to maybe push some deer to my dad. Only say a spike at 930 or so.

I've been seeing deer just nothing big enough to pull the trigger on. I found a new spot that is absolute cover in scraps and rubs that I'm gonna hunt in the morning.

Story of my season so far too. Seeing tons of deer and lots of young bucks, but haven’t seen a shooter since bow season

Bucks are really starting to chase at my place this week from what I’ve heard. My brother shot one that he was unable to recover and my dad killed a good one yesterday afternoon. I plan on hunting a good bit Saturday-Tuesday. Hope to get us some points. Here’s my dads buck

Thanks slippin, I haven’t seen it in person yet but it is definitely a pretty rack, the kickers on the g2s give him a little character too. Im gonna skull mount it for him.

I do have done a lot of skull mounts. If you need any advice or just want to talk about it, shoot me a PM.

Speaking of skull mounts, I still have that dang deer head in a 5 gal bucket in the back of my truck. It's been so cold, I checked it this morning and it was a deer head in a huge cube of ice.
