Hey guys,

I am looking for a bit of advice. We disced and fertilized last weekend but didn't have time to get seed in the ground. We are planning to go back this weekend to plant but I am concerned about all of this rain. I am used to planting in a dusty dry field and praying for rain, not planting in the middle of a two week downpour. We use a broadcast spreader on an ATV and a basic drag to cover.

Our soil is mostly clay based with some sandy areas mixed in, timber company land. I am worried the soil may crust over and bury seed after it dries out. Most of the plots are on ridge tops and drain fairly well, so I don't think we will have to deal with any standing water. Any experience with this? Are we better off waiting?

If you get on it too quick you can compact the soil, especially clay soil. None of us can answer that question without looking at your plots, but an atv is not near as heavy as a tractor, so maybe you'll be ok

As long as its not soupy mud where I'm sinking too bad it should be alright? I'll just have to give it the eye test I suppose and see how bad it is. If its draining well it may not be an issue.

If you can get through field without tracking you should be fine. Just throw it on ground and it should germinate quickly on moist soil. I doubt I’d even drag it

I planted 2 fields on Saturday and Sunday before the rain started. Already germinating as of Tuesday. I timed it perfect. Last year I waited until the first week of October and nothing came in due to lack of rain.

We planted one of our leases last weekend because we wouldn’t be able to get tractors in to plant with all the rain. The other lease we are gonna try and plant Saturday. Everything is disked and leveled and we are gonna just broadcast the seed and cultipack it it. I think you will be fine but it’s hard to answer that without seeing what you got

Unless it dries out a good bit we are going to have a few plots that are too wet to work. We might just broadcast some seed in some of them and if they come up good throw out some fertilizer later.

Short answer, it is too wet to plant. We started to disc our plots yesterday and there was small amount of moisture in the ground and they were breaking up nicely. Then we got 1" of rain and forecast for more rain today, Friday and Saturday. We will wait about three days and begin to disc again on Wednesday or Thursday after it has dried out and plant on Friday and Saturday. There is no rush to get the seed in the ground. Why spend all that money and time on seed and fert. Wait and you will be glad you did.

Needed to see this tonight... Im a fairly impatient person when it comes to things like this and I have been chomping at the bit to plant for bow season.

We went to plant last weekend before all this rain and experienced tractor trouble. We did get the tractor functioning again today before all the rain hit but then realized that it was going to be to wet to plant this weekend most likely. I get so hung up on getting the seed in the ground but Muzzie is 100% right.
Seed can go in the ground anywhere between now and late October with little chance of a bad stand. We will go down and check fields and see this weekend but if it is too wet I will do my absolute best to keep my composure.

Well fortunately everything went well this weekend. Fields were just a little moist and I was able to get everything planted thank goodness. Thanks for the input guys, hope ya'll get yours handled soon as well.
