over the last couple weeks I have had a couple trail cameras set up under persimmon trees, and what I am getting is a lot more coyote pictures than deer pictures. Have any of you ever set for coyotes this time of year under persimmon trees? Any special advice for a newby coyote trapper, like use of lures or baits, and is there any special precautions to be taken to make sure you don't snap on a deer? Thanks.

Deer feet taper enough that they can pull out most of the time. Are there any trails, habitat changes or terrain features close by that you could set as they headed to the persimmons. That would help with deer snapping traps. Dirt holes or flat sets with gland lure and urine are my hot weather sets, baits attract ants this time of year.

AUCoonhunter, Thanks for the reply. The 2 cameras I have set out are both standing in a recently disked and planted small food plot, only about an acre in size. There are a couple of trails leading into the field but I think those are mainly used by deer. There are 3 persimmon trees that are loaded and dropping right now and coyotes seem to be coming in there several nights a week. Thanks for the bait tip, I've had lots of ant troubles trapping coons in the hot weather with marshmellows. Is there a non ant attractant to use for coons? Thanks

Shelled corn with a gland lure or shellfish oil smeared on the lip of the trap. If there is a road leading into the food plot, set the edges of it. Coyotes will walk roads and paths of least resistance.

Coyotes love sweets! You can trap them around an attractant like ripe persimmons but a fruity bait (or anything else) this time of year will draw ants like crazy.

Matt's on the money with setting trails and terrain features close to the dropping fruit.

Rather than using any type of bait. I would just focus on trails and and terrain features as previously stated. Nothing against bait but personally I have had much more success using beaver castor or another gland lure.
