What's a ballpark number to expect to be charged by a CPA to do both your small corp and personal taxes.?

Depends on a ton of things:
How much revenue you've got running through your business.
Any complicated tax or accounting transactions associated with it
Type of business
Are you providing financials
Past accuracy of the financials you've provided
Does the CPA do an annual compilation and review of your books or an audit
What the CPA feels their risk assessment is in taking you on as a client.
Big firm, small firm, individual CPA performing the tax work

It honestly could be anywhere between $500 and $15,000 depending on the scope of the engagement.

Very small mom and pop business. Pretty straightforward. Also, need payroll for one employee. Financials supplied. No audit reviews.

abolt300 is right. Too many variables to answer. Its like "how much will it cost to fix my car"...depends on time/expertise and who's time is being used. Firms I've used charge me for time....highly experienced accountant $150-200 billable per hour, experienced staff $30-40 billable per hour, lower skilled staff there might be $20/hour billed. Maybe some accountants charge more or less per hour, but this has been my experience.

If your taxes are straightforward and simple, and fees are a hurdle, just use an online software to do them.

Assuming you're an LLC operating as a partnership or sole proprietor and can just do a schedule C with your personal return, and you have good accurate detailed financials and use a local CPA, youre probably looking at $400 to $1000. If you go with a regional type firm, Carr Riggs, Warren Avrette, etc. that you do not have another engagement (audit or review) with, youre going to be looking at 35-50% higher pricing than just a local CPA. Not knowing anything about your business or personal returns, it's just a guess but I'd say probably $400-$500 just to drop the numbers in and do your return if you use a local individual CPA and not a "firm".

I'm similar to you. Mine is around $1200 and then I have Quickbooks I use for my single payroll, accounting, etc which is probably another $5-600 a year.

Deloitte and Touche was billing me out as a first year staff accountant back in 1993 at $125/hr the day I started for them straight out of college. Basic hourly charge rates for CPAs would be $250-$375/hr for partners depending on area of specialiization, $150-$200 for manager level, $100-$150 for a senior staff or staff level, non-CPA bookeepers would be around $75 and office staff making copies etc are generally billed at between $35-$50. These would be rough estimates for mid sized firms in the SE.

Most competent accountants I know wouldn't get involved in any size business combined with a personal for less than 2K. I think estimates are low.

Look in to an online paychex style service for your employee payroll. These online services are relatively cheap and handle all of the monthly/quarterly/annual employee withholding reporting at a fraction of the cost of a CPA.

When I left public accounting 5 years ago new clients individual returns were going in the range of 300-500. Add a business to that and I think you are easily in the 2k+ range. It also depends on the area/market, You may want to consider driving to a smaller town. It could easily save you a few hundred dollars.
