I killed this buck last year, thought it was just a good ol beat down but he was like that all over. After checking a camera from the same area the other day there is a doe that looks the same. Is it mange.

Should we be concerned about it? Is it contagious? If so do we need to take the doe out of the herd?

Not necessarily, mange in white-tailed deer is caused by a mite known as Demodex odocoilei that is only found on whitetails. Demodetic mange causes hair loss and thickening of the skin in the affected areas. Mange is usually fairly rare in whitetails. The lesions are confined to the skin of the animal and do not affect the muscles. I suppose that lesions could turn into an abscess but I've not seen that or read about that in any literature. After skinning the deer the infected area should be removed entirely and the meat is fine to eat.
