GW rolls up on me yesterday at Cahaba, chit chat, check license and birds in possession, and then informs me that the regs have changed and Sunday dove hunting is now outlawed. Not only that but every other day except Saturdays and Wednesdays confused. He was cool about it, no ticket and let me keep my birds but come on man, really? He laid it off on the biologists and I guess rightly so but WMA's exist for public hunting, so let the public hunt. The mourning dove is one of the most prolific breeders around, or so the biologists have said in the past. It was a freaking war zone on opening day and most people hunt the opener and maybe a couple other days and then it's all about college football and by the time the bow opener rolls around, everybody has forgotten about shooting doves until next year. Is this a deal where the DCNR just feels like it has to make changes to the regs in order to justify their existence? I don't want it to be the wild west out there but this is getting ridiculous. Somebody give me some reasons why the regs on WMA's or any public land should be any different than on any other land?

I overheard the game wardens talking about that and they said they didn’t even know about it until 2 days before dove season started

Yeah c’mon. Daniel White

That's pretty dumb.

Idk why but I never even thought about going to a WMA for dove. Guess it doesn't really matter now since you can only do it those two days.

Public land hunters always catch the short end of the stick.

Same thing happened to me. I hunted out there on Saturday and decided to go back on Sunday afternoon. I had previously gone by the HQ station to pick up my paper permit - both on Labor Day when I was scouting a bit and then again on Saturday. The only copies of the permits were from last year but I thought to myself, these things don't ever change anyway except for the date adjustments for the deer hunts. When I got there on Sunday I was shocked and excited to see that I had the field to myself! I had my two boys with me so we got unloaded and set up shop with birds flying around a bit. I started thinking to myself this was pretty unusual and went back and checked my paper permit to see if it said anything about Sunday hunting not being allowed. It didn't. Sat there for a few more minutes and thought I might as well check the new app to see if it says anything...yep, hunting only allowed on Saturdays and Wednesdays this year. Couldn't believe it. Mostly annoyed and frustrated that updated paper copies couldn't be put out by the time the season has begun.

No idea who you overheard or why they did not know. The requirements, rules, and regs. have been printed and out for all to read from at least acouple of months in the 2018-2019 Alabama Hunting & Fishing Digest. Information starts on page 14 is continued on page 26 where it lists the first and second WMA districts and rest on page 48. Different days and hours on each WMA.

I’m not sure who they were, i never saw them. They were parked about 30 feet behind me with short pine trees separating us. I could hear them talking plain as day and they were in a game warden truck and even told me nice shot a few times but never came to check me.

They made a Facebook post about Cahaba that mentioned it on Saturday. I also grabbed a permit at the HQ and it was last years. How hard is it to print new copies?

No chit? That's crazy.

Doesn't sound like any one knows, but I'd be curious the management decision behind it.
