We've killed a pile of deer with a 243. Very good caliber, but as an adult I'd take a 7-08 or 308 over a 243 any day. 243 will do the trick out past 300 though for sure. Seen it lots of times.

We've killed a pile of deer with a 243. Very good caliber, but as an adult I'd take a 7-08 or 308 over a 243 any day. 243 will do the trick out past 300 though for sure. Seen it lots of times. It's going to be very rare that I need to shoot over 300. In such a case though a knowledgeable shooter,one actually able to take longer range shots and hit with more than luck,will have a proper long range bullet for the 243,(not a powermax),and a barrel twist to stabilize that bullet. In such a case,the 243 is not a lesser cartridge. It may very well be much more deadly than a 300 win mag in the hands of a guy who is going to shoot 600 yards just because he has a 300 mag. I would concede however that in equally skilled hands,I would personally prefer to shoot the larger caliber. None of that matters at all though in 99% of Alabama hunts which are likely under 150 yards.
