Are any of you guys growing them? I stumbled on some down at the co-op a few weeks ago, felt sorry for them and brought them home and stuck them in the ground. I since have been trying to read up on them, and I'm now building a trellis with plans to try and get some healthy vines growing. What cultivars are y'all growing? I understand I must have some self fertile, or none will produce fruit. I understand Bennett's in Huntsville has several different kinds, any other places in N. Ala that has them?
Thanks.

Ison’s nursery in Ga has a good selection, it’s what they specialize in. They have a website you can order from.

When you build your trellis be sure to make it real strong. Those vines will pull down a weak system.

I have 3 single wire trelleis 60' long with three vines on each one. Got them from Isons a few years ago. They are loaded down.

If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

I don't know what variety we planted but ours are producing like crazy! We have cattle panels on large cedar posts for them to climb.

Be kind to one another and tell the ones you love that you love them often. We never know what tomorrow will bring.

For my trellis I bought six / eight foot yard timbers and buried them two feet deep in a rectangular box formation (three on each side). I then wrapped it around the top with a 2 x 6 and one cross ways between the middle posts. I used the deck hanger fasteners for the 2x6’s. I have 2 plants on this trellis. One at each end. When it comes time to harvest the scuppernongs you can simply walk under the trellis and grab handfuls of them. Easy picking. Remember to cut the vines back to several main runner’s each year in January or February when the temperature has been below freezing for a couple of days when the sap is in the ground deep.

I HAD three trellis’, each 80’ long. I bought my muscadine from Isons. I trained, pruned and babied the vines and when they turned 4 years old the damn cold weather killed them! Killed mine and all of my neighbors vines too.

I learnt this the hard way years ago. Used 4" round post one on each end and one in the middle and two plants on that run. First year they actually produced alot of fruit they pulled the post over almost pulled them slam out of the ground. Now I built them with cross ties in a "h" pattern with eyelets on both ends with his turn buckles so I can tighten them up when the need it and I used heavy high tensile electric fence wire for the single wire the runners go down. The house we bought a little over a year ago from my aunt and uncle had grapes and the made theirs out of post like a arbor and hissed field fence over the top and sides and it's a huge pain in the ass to prune. If you use the single wire type which is what my muscadine are one it's very simple and easy to prune every year
