A PIC from outside the pen. Finished box set in place. Close up of the entrance hole. Got 8" hinges on the lid and the cable attaches to the lid through a threaded eye bolt. Cable attaches to lid and runs through a pulley that is mounted on front of the coop. Cable runs over to the hand cranked winch for easy raising and lowering of the heavy lid. Lid opens to access eggs laid inside of box on pine shavings. A PIC of a few of my hens and my rooster. I have five Calico Princess hens, five Sapphire Gem hens and one Sapphire Gem rooster. The box is built on three treated 4" x 4" runners to keep it off the ground. Completely painted inside and out. Galvalume metal on the top with 10" overhang all the way around the box. It is almost effortless in raising the lid up and down. Trying to watch out for myself for when I get old! It's getting close to time for the girls to start to laying. Can't wait for fresh eggs again.

It's just an open area with no individual nest? Yes sir, it is just one large open box filled with pine shavings and all the hens share the same box to lay in. Hence the name "Community" laying box. There will be 2-3 different little nests inside that they all wallow out to lay their eggs in. This type of laying box works really well.
