Had a few easy questions and coons.

When do you not trap them?
What do you do with them? Couldn't imagine eating it, don't want to chuck it in the woods. Pelts seem a lot of work for little reward.
Do dp usually break the leg? Trick to prevent?

I searched but didn't find answers
Thanks

Trap them anytime that you have time. Saving turkey nests is all I need to get out of a coon, skin them if you want to work with pelts but there isn’t going to be any money in southern coons right now. DPs do not usually break legs, in fact I have never had a broke leg from a dp on a coon. Have had a few broken legs on small possums that can’t pull the trap out of the ground.

Anytime was my hope. I know there isn't a law, pondered if there was a bad time of year where it was a waste of time. Yeah I have no interest in their mangy ass pelts honestly. I'm just trying to get rid of the egg suckers so hopefully we can start having some turkeys.

I just started trapping on this lease this weekend because I got so many going to my main feeder. I picked one up this morning, fairly large female with a broken leg in the dog proof. Never went after Coons before I never use dog proofs so.

Thanks for the advice.

An extra swivel will help on the leg issue but it does happen sometimes.

Since the end of turkey season Ive caught a combined 41 on coon/possum on one series of tracts near the Alabama River. Caught another 7-8 on some other properties.

I'd concentrate my main trapping efforts in Feb-March ahead of nesting season. They fill back in over time so if you trap now and then decide you don't want to trap anymore before next spring, you've really not accomplished much.

As long as you are seeing them on cameras keep trapping. With continuous trapping you can put a dent in them and the turkey will thank you. Get some kids interested in running the DP traps and let em wear them out.

Not worth skinning one for me. Ours all go in the hole.

Buzzard has to eat, same as the worms. I skin and tan some of the best ones, but most of them go to a ditch.

I throw them as far as I can from where the trap is, reset it, and call it good
