My oldest got her own apt in Tuscaloosa. She is a sophomore at Alabama. She has never owned a pistol before but has shot pistols. This Mollie Tibbetts case has me thinking pro active. How many of y’all sent a firearm with your daughter to college? Which pistol would the experts here recommend?

Many of the places she will likely routinely go it isn't allowed and probably not advised. Gameday, bars, on campus, fraternity/sorority events.
I'm not dissuading the idea of concealed carry but she's not going to be toting her gun every step she takes at least legally.

You'll get the suggestion of the ubiquitous snubnose 38 but I feel like that's a cop out response.
Visit an indoor shooting range with rentals or gather together several different possibilities.

Suggestions from me are. Sig 938, Glock 42/43, Kahr and a S&W Jframe ONLY if she actually likes it.

get her something she will, and can, carry. When my sister went to Tulane I bought her a Beretta .22lr pop up pistol. Easy to use and easier to carry. Two er four 22lr bullets will go a long way to changing an attackers plan.

Make sure she has mace/pepper spray, strong flashlight and loud whistle with her all the time.

This is what we did. Went to that place in Hoover that I can't think of the name of. I told her I wanted her to pick the largest caliber she felt comfortable with. She shot quite a few rentals and settled on Sig .380. I worried all the time because I'm not sure how much good it did her because she had to keep it locked in her car in a parking deck. Couldn't carry on campus. I was always worried it would be stolen. Not even sure if it was legal to have it in her car. I'm a rule follower but I didn't even ask because I didn't want to know.

Whatever she gets spend the time with her and make sure she can shoot the damn thing. I love my daughter but she can't shoot for chit! I put her 10 yards in front of a pallet with target stapled to it and her impact is usually anywhere from 2-5 feet in the ground in front of the pallet. I know what she does I just don't know how to get her to stop doing it. I'm just hoping if she ever has to squeeze one off, the sound will scare the bad guy away cause she sure as hell isn't going to hit him unless she can smell his breath and that's too close.

Take her to a place that has a lot of choices. Wade's pawn and gun on McFarland and then woods and water. My daughter liked the Smith and Wesson m&p shield 2.0 so I bought two. One for each daughter. My oldest didn't like hers so I gave her my m&p 40 (full size) . The 9mm ammo offered now brings the ole 9 to new levels. Personally I wouldn't go less than a 9mm. My daughter shot my h&k vp9 first and was centering a 5gallon bucket from 25 feet. I moved it out to 35 yds and she was still centering it. This was the first time she had shot an automatic. The full sized will have less recoil and more capacity but too big for carrying in a purse . The shield has a manual safety and textured grip.

The places she will likely be in the most danger she cannot legally carry and will depending on the daughter often be some variation of drunk.
Pepper spray, charged cell phone and good friends will serve her better and keep her out of more trouble than a gun can get her out of.

I understand a firearm is the ultimate equalizer in situations but leaving the bar blackout drunk at 0200 a gun probably isn't the most effective tool.

You are making it sound like she is a habitual drunk. All kids don't partake in drunken activities

A gun is only good on the hands of a confident handler. If she is at all worried and the fact that where she could get in trouble she probably wouldn't be allowed to have it I would suggest the taser that looks and shoots pronhs like a gun. Still has some distance, but can't get you in trouble like a gun. In the apartment I'd suggest a Ruger lc9 inside a locked safe that fits in a drawer.

That’s right. So far she has none of her fathers bad habits. Doesn’t drink. No bars. I offered to pay for a sorority and she declined. I’m thinking a revolver and really appreciate the input.

My youngest daughter just went off to grad school and living on her own with a Glock 42! Heck when I was in Auburn just about every guy I knew had a gun in their vehicle and many were in the back window of their truck!

100k volt stun gun will change someones attitude in a hurry if a revolver is out of the question. Send her to a self defense class ASAP.

Mine is living at home, going to community college. She needs 1-2 more backyard range sessions and she'll be carrying. Probably have mace too.

i think a young girl is better off with some strong mace or a taser if they hesitate any their pistol may be used against them. its alot easier to work up the nerve to mace or taze someone shooting them is completely different.

AU7MM08 has a point. Even if you do not drink or go to bars, there are twice as many situations that one can find themselves getting caught up in that they normally would not. Alabama is a huge party school, you can even catch the asians downtown.

I would not suggest someone conceal carrying, male or female, at/in/around a college or university unless they are already familiar/comfortable with carrying prior to. Concealed carry is a whole lot more than just being able to shoot a pistol i.e. situation awareness, laws, restrictions etc. and trying to do that in school without experience could result in some bad situations.

There is also the topic of storage. I had two lock boxes, one in my truck and one in my car and I still had mine stolen out of my truck. RIP.

My dad bought both my sisters tasers and spray for college and was always complaining that they never had them with them. Nor were they able to easily access them. I will add that my sister never carried in college; however, following college she took a shooting training course and now carries a S&W M&P shield 9mm. It may not have the most stopping power, but she is very comfortable and accurate with it.

I agree you should best prepare and provide the tools necessary for your daughter to protect herself, whether that is a pistol or something else is up to her and you. Good Luck.
