This seems to be fairly common in our area. Why?

It’s just a complete guess but I think maybe it happens to bucks that spend a lot time in really thick understory during the summer months. I think at some point they may injure the growing antler somehow on the undergrowth. Maybe they got spooked and took off running and injured it somehow. Another option may be that they injured the pedicle fighting the previous winter.

I think this is probably correct. I used to hunt on some family property in Florida that was really thick, probably over 50% of our bucks had at least one side messed up like that.

I’ve got a lease that half of the bucks on camera are half racked meaning a good main rail with points and one long spike. It’s been like that for years and even talking to my neighbors who have owned the land behind us for 40 plus years said it’s been like that as long as they have had that land. I reckon ours is more genetic

We've had bucks like this on our lease that we've seen/killed for the last 20 years. I believe ours is also genetic as it's almost always the deer's right side.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Injuries just prior to antler cast makes up a significant proportion of deer like that.
