Went into Marks this afternoon to purchase a box of Barnes 130gr TTSX for the Tikka Compact I picked up for my girlfriend.
They were out of stock on the ammo but I did find a Remington Model 7 in 7MM08 that left with me. laugh First Remington product I have ever purchased.
The rifle is in great shape, only downside is that it has the Jlock mechanism.

You can by a bolt shroud from Brownells to get rid of the J lock

I've got one that has the j-lock. I initially thought I would hate it and change it, but it's never been an issue. I don't plan on ever changing it out.

I took a quick look(not methodical) on Brownells and didn't find that replacement part. I will likely be the same if I know myself well enough.

Think I've found the perfect scope. https://www.leupold.com/scopes/compact-scopes/vx-3i-2-5-8x36mm

It might have been an impulse, but you could have made a lot worse decision than that...

Do they come with that rail?

Apparently, I misspoke. While everyone and their brother makes one for a 700, no one - that I can find - makes one for a Model Seven. If I remember correctly, The Seven part is slightly shorter than the 700...

Midwest Gun Works has a factory replacement Mash 'Righ Here

If you start experiencing buyers remorse for the impulse purchase, let me know. I know how to cure that and will be happy to see if I can help!! grin

You may be right Doc I thought at one time that PTJ offered a non J-lock bolt shroud and a firing pin assembly for a 7. A quick look shows that they no longer offer a non-Jlock assembly but the shroud itself doesn’t specify. Here’s the link I’d give em a call and check.

Now I'm shopping triggers. Sitting in the hotel dry firing this thing disappointed in the trigger. Going to guess it's 6lbs+ based off my super accurate finger gauge.

That’s a good looking rifle. 7-08 is a great round.

Thank you. Thinking this rifle will get fed a diet of either 120gr Fusion or 120gr TTSX.

If I'm not mistaken that Model Seven 7-08 is gonna have a 1:9 twist rate which will really like the heavier bullets. My all time favorite 7-08 factory round is 140gr Nosler Partition. Nice rifle by the way!

Off subject but nosler partition is one of the best hunting bullet there are imo

That gun has the old Walker style trigger. It is very adjustable.

You’re going to enjoy that gun. I owned one for 15 minutes season before last. Shot one deer with it and it crushed it. Federal Fusion 140s if memory serves.

That has always been my go to round in a 7mm-08

Mine likes 140 fusions... I bought it for the GF. It never made it to her. One of my favorite rifles.

Take it to a good gunsmith (like gundoc) to get the trigger adjusted.

I'm foreseeing that being the case with this one.
Limbsaver, trigger, VX3i 2.5-8X36 and figure out its favorite flavor of ammo.

Not sure what I'm going to do about scope mounting. Stay with the pic rail or go another route.

If you change the trigger, I recommend either TriggerTech or Timney, in that order.

I put Timneys in all of my rifles and shotguns. I put Talley rings on my Model Sevens. My Model Seven in 7-08 shoots 120 grain NBT and 140 grain Accubonds and Partitions very accurately.

Any noticeable difference in the recoil between the 120s and 140s?
I had a Ruger M77 Ultralight in 308 and that thing plain stomped my ass with 150s because it was so feather light.

I ordered a 3.5-10x40 VX3i today for my model 7. $319 shipped from cameralandny.com. Cheapest I’d seen it anywhere. I put one on my 280. Lot of scope for that price.

A good gunsmith can make the Walker trigger very nice.

I used a lot of 140gr Nosler Ballistic tip back when Remington still loaded them. I switched to 139gr SST Light Magnums and killed a good many with them without fail.

Looks like the pic rail is going to be getting tossed. Looking at 1" pic ring options most of them are expensive tactical kinda rings. Not what I am needing for it.

To me not a difference. I can tell a difference between 140 in 708 vs 150 in 308 model model 7's

Personally, I would ditch the rail and go with Talley Lightweight rings. If a rail isn't +20 MOA, it only functions to elevate the scope and add a connection point

Looks like the pic rail is going to be getting tossed. Looking at 1" pic ring options most of them are expensive tactical kinda rings. Not what I am needing for it.

Personally, I would ditch the rail and go with Talley Lightweight rings. If a rail isn't +20 MOA, it only functions to elevate the scope and add a connection point

Agreed. It will also remove 2-4 screws(ring crossbolts) and a jagged point on the rifle.
Trying to trade it for a set of Talleys, nothing to lose.

Ya. Going to try trading first and then probably break down and buy a set.

Any noticeable difference in the recoil between the 120s and 140s?
I had a Ruger M77 Ultralight in 308 and that thing plain stomped my ass with 150s because it was so feather light.

I don’t notice any difference in recoil.

83% of all statistics are made up.

This will be my next deer rifle I buy. That is when my 308 LTR get the new barrel installed, it will become a target gun for the most part.

Thanks for all the feedback. Put some Shooters Choice grease on the bolt surfaces and that really slicked it up.
Really excited for this rifle. It will be heading to Gundoc next week I'm thinking.

His rifle doesn't have a POS x-Mark trigger. His has the old walker style trigger which can be adjusted down to a nice, crisp 2-1/2 lbs, or less if you desire.
