I consider myself a "decent" shot with a bow, but I'd like to shrink my groups down a little bit. Currently, at 30yds, the best I can do is shooting roughly 4-6" group. I'd like to be capable of shooting tight enough groups that I had to shoot at separate dots on The Block to avoid tearing up arrows I'm shooting a 2013 PSE Bowmadness with a single pin slider sight (forget the brand/model, but it's not a super high-end one) and a whisker biscuit rest. Is 4-6" @ 30yds about the best I can expect without upgrading the rest and sights, or can I improve on that? If so, what are some general tips for improving accuracy (or most common mistakes people make that hurt it?) I'm confident that the bow is set up correctly in terms of draw length and whatnot, so I'm wondering if it's just me...I know "practice makes perfect", but only if you're practicing the right things...

Only perfect practice makes perfect.
Try shooting at smaller targets. I shoot at quarter size dots on my targets. That should make you concentrate more on your shot than a larger target.

if the bow is tuned and the sight doesn't have any play in it, the accuracy potential of the bow lies in the hands of the Injun holding it. One thing many folks wanna do is hold the pin dead still on the target. That is a recipe for target panic and big groups. Even the best archers in the world float the pin on target. It takes some getting used to but once you wrap your head around the concept good things will start to happen.

I bought a block this weekend, noticed there are only dots on one side. May paint some smaller ones on the backside of it.

I trace a quarter with a Sharpie and shade the circle in with a Sharpie.

No one can hold the pin perfectly still on the target. Let the pin float around the spot and focus on the spot you want to hit. You should not be focusing on the pin when the bow goes off. If you do, you’ll hit the spot the pin is on. 99% of the time your pin isn’t going to be on the spot you want to hit when the bow goes off. Also, keep aiming until you hear the arrow strike the target. While aiming your finger should be on the trigger. If it isn’t, in that split second you decide to let it go and your finger reaches the trigger, your bow arm will move or you’ll move your bow hand. The bigger surprise the shot is, the better the shot it will be. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You may have to come to grips with the fact that some people just suck at shooting a bow.

Good advice guys thanks. Shooting at 60 yards helps my groups at 30 yards. I want a maximum hunting rang to 40 yards so I practice a lot at 50 and 60.

Go on YouTube and watch some of John Dudley(Nock On Archery) videos. He explains a lot of different things in detail that can help you. Your grip, your anchor point and the way you release the arrow has to be the same every time to be accurate. PSE makes good bows that are capable of real tight groups. These groups were shot with a PSE Chaos at 50# and gold tip cutdown 400 arrows. The first group is 30 yards and the second is 50 yards. Also make sure with the whisker biscuit rest that your fletchings are not going through the black bristles at the bottom. They are stiffer and will affect arrow flight. I'd hate to be a deer in your neck of the woods. Nice shootin man. Thanks. I whacked this old doe with the PSE Chaos last year. It doesn’t take 70 lbs and 300 fps to kill a deer. You just need quiet and accurate.

You can't go wrong with Shaw's advice. But remember that shooting a wild animal is much different than shooting a fixed target. There's no practical way to practice either. You just have to stick with it, accept the misses, and the bad hits, don't try to extend your effective range and learn from the mistakes.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.
