I got a Rivercane call from Gil Stacy of Savannah, GA about halfway through the season and used it to kill several turkeys. I posted about it several times back during the season. It works on the same principle as a wingbone or a trumpet, but it produces a softer call because it takes so little air to run it. There is a thread on Gobbler Nation where Gil tells exactly how to make them. It is nothing more than 2 pieces of cane with a faucet washer for a lip stop.

I got some cane about a month ago and spent some time yesterday cutting it to length, though it needs to dry some more before I finish it. They really are simple to make. With me running one, it sounds like a young hen. I'm not able to make raspy sounds with it, but it does make a sound that is a little different than other calls. It seemed to work well on pressured turkeys because it's possible to be so soft with it.

I made a test video in the house a few weeks ago, and was planning to go outside and make something that would be more professional, but I never got around to it. Here is the short video I made:

I made 10 or 12 a few years ago. Experimented a little. I just can't learn to call with a trumpet enough to be comfortable using one. I gave several away that ended up calling in some gobblers though. Neat calls.

She'll be a killer. Hard to judge suction type calls indoors. Amazing how they sounds 50yds + in the woods.

I don't know why, but any sort of suction call sounds better from a distance, more so than other type calls. I have watched videos of trumpet makers with big time reputations that honestly sounded sort of underwhelming, but from a distance the same guy sounds really good. Frank Cox loves to ridicule people, but there is a video on YouTube of him using one of his trumpets outdoors, and I gotta admit that it sounds great.

I heard a hen yelping from the roost near the end of the season in AL and I thought she sounded exactly like a Rivercane call. Others that are more raspy don't sound like it at all. When you are just an average caller, like I am, it's good to carry several different kinds of calls to mimic different sounding hens. The guys doing the Pinhotti videos are good enough with mouth calls that they don't need to fool with anything else. And I would probably kill the same number of turkeys just using a couple of mouth calls, but using different calls is part of the fun of the sport to me.

No doubt PCP, using different calls and guns are a big part of my turkey hunting enjoyment these days. I hope one of these days I’ll run into someone who can show me how to use a trumpet.

I've honestly gotten to the point to where all I use is mouth calls and trumpets, I may have to make a couple of these just to add to the selection.

Lots of call makers just reinventing the wheel. Go to the local sporting goods store and you’ll for sure find about 10 different glass calls as well as slate. About every 3 stores might carry a trumpet. I have never owned one but yours sounded good to me.

ya, was gonna make this exact comment ... up close on a camera, inside, all calls sounds harsher than outside ... sounds really good to my ears, Steve

The worst calling, I ever heard, turned out to be a real hen.
A live turkey could never win a turkey calling contest.
