I bought 10 acres at the beginning of the year of mountain land that touches a chunk of public land. The main thing that is missing from all surrounding land is late season food. So we went in today and cleared out some trees. We pulled the trees and Lim s in order to funnel some deer and block there view. Still have a few trees to go, then spray and get some seeds in ground. I'm thing a clover, chickory, winter wheat mix will do best in the Rocky shallow soil that is still gonna get shade. What are some suggestions to make it even better?

buck forage oats, grain rye, top seed with clover and chickory for youre fall/winter plot and iron clay/cow peas for summer plot . around the edges of the plot plant kieffer pears , crab apples and native perssimons . else where on your land plant a group of oaks and chestnuts..if you have a spot you can hinge cut like the other said that would help a bunch also go around and plant pines to thickin up cover .….come in work , set up stand locations and stay out till time to hunt and you will have a deer magnet piece of property...you will love managing you own land ….its addicting and you will want more before long...congrats.

I'm going back Monday morning. My plan is to finish the plot by removing all felled trees, Hinge cutting some edges, blowing leaf litter out and spraying ground with glyphosate. I'm gonna hinge a small section about 100 yards away from the plot and another section below a ridge the deer funnel through. I'm hoping to pull more does in and get bucks cruising in January. Other than moving cameras and putting out some corn so we can start getting an inventory of the lease. It is moving well. Will hang stands in Sept when we plant.

I've never had luck with chicory in my small spots on the mountain. Clover does good, but they eat it down to the ground before it can even get established. Get as much sun in there as you can. If its not a tree that has wildlife value - cut it down/hinge it.

I need to get up there still and check it out. We will make that happen soon.
