I don't have the 350R, but I have a pair of Motorola radios and the sound quality on both TX and RX is as good as my Yaesu mobile and base HAM units. You'll need a license to transmit on the GMRS frequencies to get the most out of them. The FRS channels can be used without a license. Either way, don't expect to get the 35 mile range they advertise unless you are on the top of a resort in Gulf Shores talking to someone out in the gulf.
You could buy a couple HAM handhelds and since you'd be getting a license anyway, just go ahead and get the Tech amateur license and you could program those to work on repeaters or use the FRS/GMRS frequencies too for a lot less money
Edit : I just re-read your post. If I could get them free, they may be fun to play with.

There are two types of gun enthusiasts ... Those who have been F#CKED by PTG and those who will be!

Yeah they won't talk to each other. The CB channels are the old 11 meter HF band while those operate in the UHF 462.ish MHz.
