Because the Mexicans had blue uniforms. That's a wild ass guess.

There are 3 certainties in an uncertain world:
1. All Politicians Are Liars 2. All Gun Laws Are an Infringement 3. Taxation Is Theft

Actually that's not correct according to the Military History information. The real reason was a lack of uniformity across the board. In the 1870s and 1880s many soldiers, especially calvary, wore a variety of different clothing and head gear. Thus lead to much confusion when fighting broke out.

BS Mark!
The introduction of smokeless powder as the preferred propellant in the 1880’s, made it unnecessary to wear bright colors. Gunpowder (or so-called black powder), which had been in use for centuries, was a very inefficient propellant. Combustion was slow, leaving much unburnt matter to be spewed out of the barrel as a cloud of particulates (smoke). In battle, muskets and cannon would quickly obscure the field, making it necessary to mass infantry in tightly packed formations in order to exercise command and control - and to wear brightly colored uniforms to distinguish ones own troops from the enemy. Smokeless powder (sometime called “white power”) was both much more efficient and 3x more powerful than black powder. This resulted in longer engagement ranges, better visibility on battlefields, and increased lethality. In reaction, militaries gradually adopted new methods of command and control, “open order” tactics, and changed to less obvious uniforms.
