These "awards" were created solely for ESPN to sell advertising in one of the most dead sports periods of the year. Literally nothing is going on right now other than golf and baseball, and baseball's All-Star break makes it even more dead. The days before and after the All-Star Game are the only days of the year when no other sports are being played by any of the big leagues, golf or tennis. Monday and today, before/after the game, has zilch.

ESPN did this to cobble together all of its highlights, create an evening like the Academy Awards and Tony Awards for sports, and then sell the hell out of advertising for it. The show and buildup (and online) is a nice revenue-generator for the network, especially during this slow sports period.

Cliff notes version of Clem's post - the Espys are a load of chit.

What a joke. The winner was the Notre Dame girls basketball player hitting the 3 pointer to beat Miss State in womens basketball. Yeah thats bigger then an overtime dime for CFP championship. The part that is laughable is the fact that perhaps the worst non call in sports history happened prior to the shot. Miss State girl got mugged, tackled, tripped beaten ad nauseum and turned ball over for girl to hit 3 pointer. Miss State had give me layup....

ESPYS blow. Glad I listened to yall and didnt watch!

The funnies part of Danica's attempt to be funny was the looks on the audiences faces. It was painful for me I can imagine how bad it was to actually be there.

When I see the word ESPY I always think of the Jim Valvano speech in 1993 as he was dying of cancer. This is one of the most inspirational speeches I have ever heard.
