Size of small-medium rodents. Like monster shrimp. Black ones. They must get fat in the delta. They were sitting on some old wooden pilings in the river. One on each post. I have seen them throughout the years in different parts of the state but never close to this size.

Lubbers. They get thick every few years in this area. Nothing really eats them that I have seen.

Did they have red or yellow markings? I saw some in Greenville, Mississippi, back in 1995 that were gigantic, like the size of my little finger. Eastern Lubber Grasshopper. They were everywhere, including in the hotel rooms.

Not sure the color. Very faint whatever it was. Possibly orange-ish. Should have taken some pics. They were not skittish.

They are there every year. They are black with yellow stripes. Yeah, I've seen them that big before. During this period it is impossible to catch a bass on topwater. We always figured they must be toxic.

I cut a ladys yard the other day and she had some huge black/red grasshoppers. Im guessing they were 3 inches or better.

Used to see them around Cleburne & Calhoun County back in the day. Called them Devil's Horses but I can't recall seeing one in several years.

That is correct.

Overall, the natural enemies of lubber grasshoppers are poorly documented. Vertebrate predators such as birds and lizards learn to avoid these insects due to the production of toxic secretions by the adult hoppers, though this is not absolute (Chapman and Joern 1990). Naïve vertebrates often gag, regurgitate, and sometimes die following consumption of lubbers (Yousef and Whitman 1992). However, loggerhead shrikes, Lanius ludovicianus Linnaeus, capture and cache lubbers by impaling them on thorns and the barbs of barbed wire fence. After 1-2 days the toxins degrade and the dead lubbers become edible to the shrikes (Yousef and Whitman 1992)

We used to turn their heads around backwards and watch them walk around.

We used to shoot 'em with BB guns. The ones we saw were huge, black with red racing stripes laugh

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

They aren’t good for anything. Fish won’t touch them.
