I used to all the time when I was a kid. Better bait than crickets. Back then there was several barns and other structures to know down plenty of nests. Lots of adrenalin rushes in that!

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I don’t know how they could be better then crickets. Plus, crickets are pretty damn easy and convenient , but I’ll take ya’lls word on it. grin

Used them all the time when I was a kid. One nibble and they are off the hook.

My great-uncle could rub his hand in his arm pit and reach up and grab a nest and not get stung.

Don't see those huge wasp nests anymore.

Lonster, there are people here who won't believe that armpit trick, but I have seen it done. When I was a kid on the farm, we had an old Creek Indian named Gus who worked for us. He used that trick to collect nests that grew in the dried cornfield. We, being chicken-squat white folks, would tie a wad of paper to the end of a bream pole and light it so we could sear the wings off the adult wasps sitting on the nest. Then you hurried to knock down the nests before the unharmed adults flew back in. As mentioned earlier, they didn't last long on a hook. If you want long-lasting bait, it's hard to beat a catalpa sphinx moth caterpillar. That's tobber worms for you unwashed heathens.

We used to light a piece of newspaper, hold it quickly up to the nest to burn all the wings off the wasps, then pull the nest down and use it for fish bait.

A word of caution!!!...do not acquire the nest a couple days in advance of your fishing trip and store it in a paper bag, you'll get a real nasty (and painful) surprise when you're out on the boat and reach into it to get the nest!
Ask me how I know that!

I've used wasp larvae and also maggots. We harvested maggots from old fish heads and put them in a 5 gallon bucket of shelled corn with a little water. Dang things grew to almost the diameter of a pencil and were super tough for a fish to knock off the hook. And yes they worked very good

Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

I took a wasp nest to show and tell in the 3rd or 4th grade. They started emerging from the nest during the day. Pretty cool to watch.

My grandfather would bake them in the oven for a little while to toughen them up so the fish couldn’t pull them off as easy.

Alagator I'm glad you could vouch for the trick. I figured some of these folks would doubt it and call me out.

I saw the armpit/ wasp nest picking trick when I was a kid one Sunday after church. The preacher wiped his hand under his armpit and plucked the nest off the church porch. That was 35+ years ago and I still ain't worked up the courage to try it.

Around the same time, we started getting those big yellow European hornets. My grandpa cut a big willow tree down by the pond that had a nest like honeybee combs inside. Me and my cousin broke into the rotten tree to look at it. My cousin took some of the combs or nests home and put them in his closet. Those jokers hatched out in their house.
