The biggest reason when I have an employee leave is pay. I can't compete with the larger companies.. I can pay a journey plumber $18-$22 an hour where the larger companies start them $26-28$ an hour.

From my viewpoint, there are too many people who aren't willing to move away to get a better opportunity.
I saw today where one of the railroads is hiring conductors. $46,000 to start, top out at $100,000, and they send you to school. No experience necessary.
It's in Indiana, but nobody says you have to stay there forever. Bet some experience, then move wherever you want to live.
Link? Tell me more. This heat and the humidity on the Gulf Coast is getting to be more than I can stand.

Whatever suits you just tickles me plum to death.
Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?

Legit curious:
What's the age range of these guys y'all are hiring who are quitting and what's the job(s)? And are they white, Hispanic, black? How long do they stay before quitting?
Bigger question: Why do y'all think these guys are quitting?
Not because 'they don't make men anymore' or anything like that. I get all that, but let's go deeper.
Is it the pay? They're legitimately lazy? They signed on but didn't realize exactly what the job was? Did they feed you guys (who are hiring) a line of bullchit about working hard and willing to do anything?
The last couple of new hires we've made, we've been very fortunate. We got good, highly capable, guys who are older than our typical hires. Both the last 2 are in their mid to late 30's. I got so tired of hiring 20somethings that I stopped doing it. I still have 3 20somethings at the shop but when they're gone, there will be no more unless I get desperate. If I've hired 100 20somethings in the past 3 years, I've fired 95 of them. 95 out of that 100 couldn't get to work on time, or laid out on Mondays, or something.... I'm a fairly easy guy to work for, but after about 3 days being late in a row I tell them to hit the bricks. Not 5-10 minutes late. I can handle that. I'm talking about 30 minutes to an hour late, walk in with eyes half swelled shut, got in bed at 4 am after being drunk the night before late.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

White and black most of them are just lazy and won't show up. I'm not going to sit here and say I'm perfect but if you tell me to be there at 730 I'm going to be within 5 mins of that may be early may be late. On the flip side of being late I've went in at 7 am everyday this week and I haven't gotten off until after 9pm and it's looking like i may be here till 10 or later tonight. The pay isn't bad and if you show up and do what your supposed to do your pay scale is going to jump up quick. Several times I've had a check between $100-300 in my box just for stepping up when needed. It's hard to even find anyone that gives a shucks no one that's come in the door since I've been here had any want to.
We will burn that bridge when we get there

The best component I've found in my life to making money is staying with one company as long as you can....stacking up raises year-after-year. After ten years, or so, you've gotten ten consecutive raises and likely add a promotion or two. I work in automotive manufacturing. It's a get your foot in the door kind of job. We start a regular line associate at around $9.50 an hour. Not the most, but it's $2.00 more than min. wage. Plenty of ways to work yourself up to $30-$50,000 and even more a year if you have the desire. I get 4 weeks of paid vacation each year AND paid straight through about 20 days of shutdown at 4th of July and Christmas. Dollar-for-dollar match on 401k. Weekends off for the most part. Best health insurance I've ever had.
My goals in life....how can I be a better father and husband, how can I put my daughter through college, how can I pay my home off faster?
The goals of the people we are hiring....what is my next tattoo going to be, I don't have transportation but I have an $800 phone, do I have enough money for beer and cigarettes this weekend?

I had a conversation with one of my employees recently regarding tardiness. He is late to work 3-4 days per week. He lives less than a mile from the shop. He has a truck that seems to have some sort of issue either cranking, or starting every day.
He is scheduled to be at work at 7:30. I asked him what time he got up? He said he sets his clock for 6:55 and hits the snooze twice "since I only live a 3/4 mile away".
I said, you know damn well your truck is going to give you trouble a few days a week, you need to get yourself out of bed about 6:30 and see if it will start. That way if it doesn't, you'll have time to jump it off, use starting fluid, or walk to work!!! He said he just didn't think he could get up that early. I told him fine, the next time you know your going to be late, just go back in the house, change out of your uniform, collect the rest of your uniforms to turn in, and bring them by and drop them off because you will no longer have a job.
He's been on time since but, it's only been a few days.
On the other hand, I have a guy that had his wisdom teeth cut out on Monday that showed up yesterday morning ready to work. I sent him home for another day of recovery.

If you're on time you're late. People that show up to work right on time, usually take another 15 to 30 minutes getting ready to start work. Anyone who values their job will be there half hour early.

I keep hearing about how great the job market is and how under our current leadership in Alabama there are jobs aplenty, yet the two year college system (a world I know much better than other work areas) is downsizing us left and right. 22 full time employees were dismissed last year at our college in a big downsizing, and Bevill State CC is threatening about the same number this year. You can't claim to be a "jobs administration" when you're putting so many folk out of work. So much information is online anyone can learn it if they want to. I hear that argument a lot for why teachers and professors need to be fired and colleges shut down, but colleges serve a critical gatekeeping function. Do you want your surgeon, accountant, or attorney to tell you, "I never had the motivation or interest to go to college, but don't worry . . . I looked this procedure up online and I think I have it. I learned all I need to know from Wikipedia." Here at the two-year college we go out of our way to teach students to attend class consistently, be on time, and turn in assignments on time -- all vital skills in the world of private sector work. Any student of mine who fails to show up for class and neglects assignments does not pass. That's a useful real-world lesson that college provides. You don't get that "reading up" on information online.

We had to fire a kid the other day after only 45 minutes into orientation. He failed his drug test. Graduated with a civil engineering degree, worked his way through school and was stupid enough to smoke a joint the day before he took his drug test.

We hire folks at the pulp mill I work at all the time, about 1 in 5 don't make it,we start out at $16/hr and within a couple of months they go to $22/hr,if they half ass try and get into the right departments they can be making $80-$120k in a few years, top operator jobs are $35-$38/hr with all the overtime you can stand, some of these folks come from pretty shitty jobs and step into a good one and just do not apply themselves at all or lay out of work,it's like they don't want to better themselves and could care less if they get fired, there's just no kind of work ethic for these younger guys now days
