I want to start loading a few calibers. What's a good press to start with? I won't be loading 1000s of rounds a year. Just a few rifle calibers and 357.

I would suggest an RCBS rockchucker. Good all-around press.

Lyman,Hornady, rcbs all quality single stage presses look at dillon precision too just in case loading a thousand rounds appeals. Buy at least two manuals (as many as you can afford would be best) and read them cover to cover at least twice before loading. I started at 13 loading .30-30 and I still get a thrill putting ammo together. Far as your .357 habit don't overlook the lowly wadcutter for plinking targets etc.

Only hits count.

If your personality is a good enough sort then anything is fine. I wouldn't buy cheap though if you will likely want a better press later. I bought a Forster Co AX as my first press just because I knew I would eventually buy it anyway.

If you aren’t going to load the same caliber for multiple guns, or if you are planning on just making those rounds set to a factory OAL, I would get the Hornady lock and load. The twist in die collars makes it easy to switch out. Also if you don’t load very often it is great because they stay set at where you left them last time. I have been using one for a few years now and it is a good solid press.

A forster press is a great press and is the one I use, but it costs twice as much as the RCBS and can be difficult to find in stock. I used a rockchucker for over 30 years and never had a problem. I believe creating more concentric ammo is more related to the quality and type of dies used rather than the press.

I would go with a Lee for limited reloading. I have had good luck with all but the smaller Progressive press (Pro 1000?) they make. It's a bit finicky for my taste. I have gotten out of and into reloading 3 different times in 20 years (kids, room, time constraints etc). Each time I sold my Lee equipment on ebay for nearly what I paid for it new...LOL! The last set-up I used was the Classic turret press. I would go back to it if I shoot enough in the future to warrant getting back 'in'.

Another vote for a rock chucker. I bought mine in a kit second hand off ebay about 12 years ago and it was probably an early 80s vintage. RCBS has shipped me free parts for it several times, even when I admittedly screwed it up myself.

I think the Rock Chucker is the inexpensive press to get. I would probably like the Lock N Load too.
