What is the most people you’ve had hunting on a small piece of property and how was it?

For instance this past year I received permission to hunt on 60 acres in low sea county for free. 2 other guys that I knew also had permission to hunt and the land owner would occasionally hunt with us. There where times that we all hunted there at the same time and still saw deer. We had 6 racked bucks on camera along with a few spikes. However None of the bucks where mature. We ended killing a spike, a six point and a doe.

On my other lease we had 6 people hunting 300 acres. We had 16 racked bucks on camera there and all saw deer every time we went.

Skyline Jacobs mountain first year it went public on first gun hunt. I believe it was about 1 hunter/10 acres

I’ve had 4 people Hunting at the same time on 90 acres. It’s a 60 acre hardwood ridge then creek bottom then 30!acre cutover. Put one person on ridge one in bottom and 2 on either side of cutover. We hunt 3 out there pretty regular. If you have diverse habitat it makes it easier. For example if it was just one 90 acre ridge I wouldn’t hunt 4 guys on the same ridge

Any more than 1 per 100 acres makes me very nervous.

I personally don’t want the ratio to be less than 1 hunter : 200 acres. Not that you can’t kill and see deer on a property with less land per hunter. It just cuts down on the pressure and opportunities for trouble between hunters.

I’ve always heard that 1 hunter per 100-200 acres was ideal but I just think that’s unrealistic for the average hunter. Seems like you would either have to know some body with a lot of land or have deep pockets.

Also does that mean you wouldn’t hunt a 40 acre property because it’s less than 100?

Also I know I said we didn’t have any mature bucks on camera but I don’t think there where any there to begin with. Luckily the land owner is letting us do a little habitat management that might help hold more deer on the property

Unrelated, but do you know what year they opened Low Gap up to the public? I want to think I hunted the first youth hunt that they had out there but I really don’t know. Would of been in the late 90’s sometime if so.

Mid 1990's Choccolocca doe draw hunt. I think it was about 45,000 acres back then and there was over 3,500 permits handed out. When I got back to the checking station with my little 3 pointer, there was still a 75 yard line waiting to get permits. If those #s are correct, and I believe them to be, that's less than 13 acres per hunter. I used my buck only tag from the previous day so I went straight to my stand which was deep in the woods instead of waiting in line for a possible doe tag. I saw several deer and 2 people before it was light enough to shoot. I squeezed the trigger as soon as I thought it would be legal to do so. Dragging that 90 lb buck out of there was scary. There was orange everywhere and even one guy with no orange at all. I had an orange cap and vest on but I was wishing I had orange pants, boots, face paint and two bicycle flags that morning. An orange tarp to wrap the deer in would have made me feel better too. I'm sure that some of those 3,500 hunters didn't bother to go in the woods once they saw how crowded it was, but it seemed like they were all there. The place I parked had 10-12 trucks there that morning when I got back to the truck. That was my last doe draw at Choccolocca.

As a rule, Me too! But I have hunted 4 on 73 acres of hills and hollers knowing everyone knew when and where everyone else was and how to hunt it successfully.
It kinda depends on the land and people

We will hunt 2 on my 40 and both see deer. But it’s usually my wife and son in a shooting house and me either in my climber or another shooting house. But we have 200 acres I prefer to hunt with just two at a time.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

Hunter to land ratio is a buncha bullcrap. I round up as many of my boys as I can and we stand shoulder to shoulder and march around. You ever seen that movie the Patriot? The one with Mel Gibson? We look like the British ranks in formation marching across a cutover. We might shoot each other from time to time but it's whatever, it be that way sometimes.

When I had my 100 acres in Lowndes, we could hunt 3 with absolutely zero problem. My old Bullock lease was 380 and it could safely hunt 5 or 6 with ease and no chance of anyone seeing another person. It all depends on the layout of the land and stand placement.

I don't like anything less than 1:100 but there are tracts that can safely hunt more.

Had to hunt or had in the Biblical sense? 1/100 or less is the recommended ratio and we are under it. If you mean in the other way, that is none of your business. grin

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Club has 12 guys, about 200 acres per guy. The average # in camp is 6, so 400 acres per hunter. We pay a premium for the higher acreage per hunter ratio.
3 guys in camp normal during turkey season, and 800 acres per hunter still doesn't seem like enough.

We have had 7 on 800 acres in another club, and that felt kind of crowded, but we had fun and saw deer most every time out.
