I was finally able to purchase my grandpa’s 1949 model A and get it moved to the house over the weekend. He passed away in 2007 and it’s been sitting longer than that since he got sick before he passed away. He would have wanted it to be shown so I intend to make that happen now that it is kind. I’ve got a lot to learn about it and a few small things to do to it before it is ready.

I doubt it looked much better than that the day it rolled of the line. I don't know squat about tractors but that thing looks like it could pull an implement and do anything you want right now, as is. That's a cool thing. Congrats!

A retired doctor a few miles away has been restoring John Deere tractors for years. He has well over 100 of them, all in big sheds. It is amazing what he is able to do with an old tractor.

Sweet tractor, glad you got it. Your tractor is not just an A but appears to an AO (orchard tractor). At least it has the correct sheet metal and exhaust. Fairly rare tractor, especially in this part of the country. Post or PM the serial number, I have several books and info on pre 1960 two cylinder JDs. I might be able to tell you the build date and if it was shipped as an AO.

I used to restore and collect a few myself. I had a couple unstyled Bs and several model H and a cool 420 Highcrop. There's a good show at Piney Chapel just south of you. I used to go to it every year. There's also a guy over near Holland's Gin used to have some nice two cylinders,I can't recall his name.

I thought it was the Model A "Johnny Popper" but I don't think it is. Sweet looking machine and I know you're proud to have it.

That's nice Brandon.

If any of y'all ever had to deal with family in an estate anything with sentimental value comes with a cost. Unless it was willed to you. I'm guessing that's what happened here. Heck my Daddy had to buy a push plow that I wanted from my granddaddy's estate. His three brothers and two of his sister's didn't care if I got it but another sister did.

Doc, what you probably heard old timers call a "Poppin' Johnny" or "Johnny Popper" would have most likely been a row crop tractor. Could be any of the models , B, A, G . Yek's AO will have the same two cylinder , horizontal engine as an A row crop tractor and will have the same sound. Now you wanta hear the big boys, that would would be the G or D. Gas , two cylinder engines with pistons bout the size of a coffee can. Sounds like a Harley on high power steroids!

Good looking piece of history there. There's no telling how much dirt that thing has turned or how much sweat has dripped on it over the years.

Yek's is electric start so he'll be on the seat. What got a lot of folks was starting the old flywheel starts in gear. Many a feller been run over and many a tractor took off through the barn with no driver. What Yek will have to watch out for is his brain telling him to hit that left peddle for the clutch. It's the left turning brake. I did it once loading an H on my goose neck trailer. Spun the front end around within a couple feet off going off the side. eek

She wanted me to have it because she wanted it to be shown and she knew i was the only one that would ever do it and carry it on. She wanted me to just take it and show it, but I wouldn’t without it being mine incase something happened or I burnt it up. She could use the money more than me right now and now the rest of the family can’t bitch and complain but there ain’t a damn thing they can do about it.
