I promise if any of y'all who were behind the OP in line would have been frothing at the mouth if he said, "Honey, just run out to the car and get your ID and bring it back so we can finish checking out."

I understand the desire to crack down on underage drinking, but it would be nice if some common sense was also used. I think it is ridiculous that a family cannot go to the store as a family and check out with alcohol now. I guess if you have your family with you, only one of you needs to wait in line and pay for things and be sure to have the ID handy.

There have been times when we have gone in a store and I didn't carry a purse in because DoA had the same plastic in his wallet that I would have used otherwise, but we have not run into that particular issue with just the two of us.

I can tell you that if your teenage son owes you money, asking him for it while checking out with your beer at Walmart is not the best idea. He had a similar reaction as the OP. We left and he got it elsewhere.

One time my brother and I were at Wal-Mart picking up a few items and got some beer. My nephew, who was probably 12 at the time, was with us. We were standing at the checkout and my nephew was unloading the buggy. The cashier said to my brother “he is not allowed to touch the alcohol” to which my brother replied “hell he put it in the buggy! If you don’t want him touching it then put it up on a damn shelf where he can’t reach it!”.

I just left the beer and about $100 worth of other stuff sitting on the register counter and left. Went across the street and bought the same stuff with no problems.

Y'all shouldn't be drinking alcohol anyway. I never touch the stuff.

I once had a brain dead manager, at Academy in montgomery, refused to sell me more than one box of 5.56 ammo. He claimed it was "federal law" that I could only purchase one box.
I was polite, the first time I explained to him there was no such law. The second time I threw the box at him and told him he could keep the $100 worth of other stuff I was about to purchase as well.

Same thing happened to my wife and I last week at the Walmart in Destin. We were in there post dinner at like 8:00pm with our 8 month old who was way past bedtime already. My wife had to go get her ID out of the car. Walmart in Montgomery damn sure doesn't ask for both of our ID's nor does the local grocery store that we shop at.

Just don't get mad at the clerk that is enforcing store policy. Have a problem showing your id, take it to the store manager. The clerk is only performing their job in the way they were instructed to do.

Back in Texas in March we had a buggy full of beer for our week's stay and I heard the check-out woman say she needed to see everyone's ID. I just walked away. Stupid rules.

This probably is something akin to "common sense beer laws,"

Yep and those laws have prevented thousands of deaths every year.....wait, no they haven't.

Just FYI, too, Target also checks IDs like this. Or the snotty woman who asked for mine did the last time I was in there. I left everything on the counter and walked out.

Retail stores can set their policies. I can choose to go elsewhere.

If I was buying beer illegally for an underaged person, I damn sure e wouldn't have them in the store with me.
Back in the day when we would run to Prichard and get someone to buy us some beer, I damned sure wouldn't walk in with him laugh

When I have been asked that question I just reply "I dont know that person. They are not with me".

Its like having to show ID to buy a knife (Im looking at you Academy).

they did this to my father in law he had a whole buggy full of stuff my 8 year old daughter helped unload th buggy on the belt she just so happened to put the 12 pack of budlight up there with some cokes and drpepper well the cashier tells my father in law they cant sell him the beer because my daughter put it on the conveyor. he got the manager involved told them that it was insulting to him that they would do that as if he was going to give an 8 year old beer just because she was trying to be helpful. he left about 300 dollars worth of stuff at the register and told them to kiss his ass and went to winndixie

There will be others who easily make up that $300 and won't care about showing an ID. Just like Dick's Sporting Goods making up the loss of a few gun owners with the stick-and-ball sports buyers.

They're closing in on $500 Billion in sales annually, they probably sold $300,000 globally in the time its taken me to type this.
