Since turkey season is over me and my son Drake are building a cedar strip canoe. We have been working on it in our spare time for 3 weeks. Hoping to be finished in 3 more weeks.

[Linked Image]
We started out with western red cedar boards 1x8x12's. Then we ripped them into 1/4" strips. We ran the strips through a router to put a bead on one side and a cove on the other side.

[Linked Image]

We built a strongback and attached forms for the strips.

I have a buddy at work who retired a few years ago. He's a serious boat builder. He started just like that and eventually moved on to building mahogany runabouts, sailboats, etc...

It's amazing how light and strong those canoes are.

Nope not LEO, criminal defense attorney actually, not retired either, I’ll probably have to work half a day on the day of my funeral.

I’ve built a couple of pirogues years ago. 20 years ago I built a cedar strip canoe when my youngest son was 2 years old. He now likes to do woodwork and stated that he wanted us to build a canoe, so I said “as soon as turkey season is over we will build each of us one.”
This will be his and his wife’s canoe. We will be starting mine in a week or so, just as soon as we glass the outside of his and we can remove it from the form.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

It's a diamond in the rough right now. Last night I pulled half of the 1,200 staples and started the first round of sanding.

Canoe looks awesome! You and Drake are doing a fine job. Build a layout boat & you can wear out the ducks in Sulligent. Will even loan you a dog if you need one.

The lady let them out of the pen and he ran straight to me and bit me, I knew then that he was after my heart and we would get along just fine!

That looks really nice! Can't wait to see the finished product.

Nice pup too. The ears crack me up. grin They look huge at that age.

if ya want to work him on bite work later I'll be glad to help you. I'd wait till he is 18 months to start bite training though. He can work on a tug rope now.

I still have a puppy sleeve somewhere, I'll look.
