I have seen cam pics of cougars off mtn fork rd in new market and in huntsville off hobbs island rd. Was not black, was no dang house cats either. I know a few that have seen cats in those areas for decades. One cedar on hobbs island rd smells like cat piss all the time. There are huge claw marks on that tree 7ft up. That tree is maybe 100ft from hobbs island rd

There have been a lot of times I wished there was a cougar on some of our roads, it might cut back on some of those idiot bicycle riders. It is tempting to bump them a little to get them to get on the edge of the road. Maybe some of the wild hogs around here will knock a few of them over.

Did see one in Skyline on a bow hunt in the late 70's. Had a racoon in his mouth. 25 yards. No doubt what I saw. It was cougar.

I can't imagine having a 150lb cat jump on me. I know how hard it can be to handle a pissed off house cat, I can't imagine a big cat.

I had a cougar attack me in my mid-20s. I kept her for a pet.

This relates to the thread about the poachers in Washington and Oregon. At one time, both states allowed the use of dogs to hunt cougars. The antis got the public stirred up about how inhumane it was, and it became illegal. As a result, cougars no longer associate the sight and smell of humans with the unpleasant experience of being hounded. They will come right into the suburban/forest interface looking for deer. My neighbors have seen cougars and bears in my neighborhood during fawn drop. To a cougar, a human is no longer a threat, but a menu item.

Cougar and bear attacks are both rare. The cats that myself and other hunters I know that have been called in here in NW Oregon while elk hunting basically got out of sight quickly after discovering that humans were there and not elk. Only issue I've had has been bears with cubs.

Curious whether that might be because a cat that comes in to an elk call is surprised to not find what he expected to find vs. a nearby cat that hears an approaching noise, such as a jogger, gets in ambush position, and then decides whether to attack or not when he sees what it is? I wonder how many cats you've walked under/by that simply decided not to attack you for whatever reason? It does seem to be rare though, as you say, or at least you don't hear that much about attacks and when you do it's always the humans fault for being there
rolleyes.

What I don't understand is why the Leo/ game wardens shot "at" the cougar rather than shooting to kill it. That cougar will catch another snow flake on a bike here in a week or 2.

Maybe that's the plan.

Being I wasn't there, My guess was biker passing by and cats instinct to chase him down kicked in. Really no clue. This time of year, the cat shouldn't be starving. My closest call wasn't as spooky as my bad bear encounters but, my friends encounter rattled him bad. I'm sure cats have stalked us calling that we've never seen.

I saw one in Troy AL in the 80's. The neighboring club was running dogs and it came off of their place and laid down up against a downed tree on the logging road I was watching. Just sat there squatted for an hour and a half with it's ears pinned back and the only thing that ever moved on it was it's tail. It finally slinked back off in the swamp. My dad had seen it earlier in the season and told me if I shot it he would beat my @$$.

Might have been an escaped pet but like you I know what I saw.

The post about it on FB has a pic of 3 Wildlife Officers and a big cat.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Cats dead. Attacked first dude, buddy ran into woods and the cat switched to him and killed him from the report. Also said they ran it off once before the attack. Weird. I didn't hear sex of the cat.

They saw it stalking them and got off their bikes to make noise and it went away. It reappeared and pounced on one of them by putting the guys whole head into its mouth. The other guy ran into the woods and the cougar went after him and killed him.

The guy whose head was in the cougars mouth was the one that lived.

I'd have to stalk the nursing homes, to hunt cougars anymore.

I thought they did kill it?

The post about it on FB has a pic of 3 Wildlife Officers and a big cat.

well I stand corrected. I didn't click on the link. I saw the story on fox6 and that's what they said. the term shooting "at" stuff ticks me off for some reason. unless you are talking about shooting at doves lol.
