The last couple of threads about childhood meals got me thinking about hoop cheese. My momma would cut hoop cheese into chunks and melt it on low heat in a cast iron skillet. It was served with link sausage, homemade biscuits, real butter and Blackburn syrup.

Hoop cheese, crackers and bologna or souse meat for lucnh when I would go cut firewood with my granddaddy. He would stop at the little country store and get it sliced and off we would go. That was the good ole days.

Grandma making us squirrels and gravy and homemade biscuits after a successful morning hunt.
Grandma making caramel cake. I still haven't tasted one as good. Her chocolate pudding was amazing too.
I used to put sharp cheddar cheese on mayo and topped with garden tomatoes and black pepper and pop it in the toaster oven for a great snack.
Sardines or potted meat with crackers on the tailgate with my dad.
Momma's round steak and gravy and her chicken and rice were great meals growing up.

Dad used to heat up lunch in tinfoil on the engine of the truck as we eased down the road of the morning hunt.

Mom cooking thinly fried pork chops over mashed potatoes. Always had brown gravy from the grease of the pork chops. Had all kinds of bits of crust and flour from the cooking in it. Hocake with syrup on the side. Come to think of it, no wonder i struggle with losing weight.

And...I still have one local place that has good hoop cheese.

A good piece of hoop cheese wrapped in saran wrap with the orange price sticker stuck to it, and thrown in the dashboard of the truck so it gets a little greasy.
Man I hope I can find a piece soon.
That's some fine eating.

You can still get Hoop cheese at Piggly Wiggly and most associated foods, it's usually in the meat dept.

Ate this breakfast many times. Mixed the syrup with the butter into an artery-clogging slurry.

Good hoop cheese is hard to beat.

I love it. Brings back childhood. When I was a kid there was a store on Hobbs Island road, Parsons Grocery. You could but anything there. On the counter they always kept a big hoop on a hand chop type slicer. You could adjust the dial for paper thin cuts or thick. Each time I went in Mr Parsons would cut me a slice and give me a big cracker. Any of yall remember when crackers came in a sheet of four not single crackesr?

While I was in College I worked at a convenience store that sold it.
Came in round wooden crate about 16" across. Cheese was
covered in a red wax. Dang that stuff was good.
