I have a buddy that owns a 30 year old BAR in 270. Through the years it’s been hit or miss in the accuracy department. I’ve floated the forend and load for it. Here’s the problem: when cases are ejected, they are extremely hot and covered in soot. Is this normal for a BAR? I know dirty cases can be a sign of a weak charge but that’s not the case here. I’ve got a lot of experience with bolt guns but don’t personally own any semi automatic hunting rifles.

Since we're all brain smart may I inquire slowburning powder or medium speed? I'd guess small base dies and medium speed powder would help. You already know to fiddle with different bullet weights. Once knew a Rem. 760 in .280 that only shot well with 160's and above weights.
Only hits count.
