I have this older pre-loved Rem 700 Varmint that I picked up last spring. I believe its the VS model. Took me three hours to clean the barrel when I first got it, but man, this thing will shoot anything you feed it. I have been loading and shooting Winchester brass for almost a year, but on a whim ordered some Lapua (palma). I wanted to test the loads to make sure the velocities were similar to keep from wasting shots next time I go to the range. In the pic, the left column of orange targets is BL-C(2), middle is Varget, and the right column is IMR4064. From top to bottom are three different charges with the middle one being what I load in the Winchester brass for each powder. The one above it is a half-grain low, the bottom row is a half-grain over. I'm shooting 168 Sierra TMKs and yesterday I was at 85 yards instead of 100, but I'll take those cloverleaves any day of the week! Also, I picked up 40-95 ft/sec with the same load in the laupa brass versus the Winchester brass velocities.
Want to put only $500-$600 in a rifle and shoot out to a 1K? It can be done very easily.
Pic to follow.
You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

Did I miss this? What caliber?
“Killing tomorrow’s trophies today.”
On the distance I like to walk to my stands: “The first 100 yards is also the last 100 yards.”

I hate I did that, Out back! LOL.
rrhunter: I shoot on my land here in Elmore in green fields when just fooling around or testing 100 yard groups. When I want to stretch it out I go to Strategic Edge in southern TN. I was invited there by a friend of mine near Athens a couple of years ago and couldn't resist joining. The 'distance' membership is dirt cheap, and after you qualify for the long range, you can let it fly out to 1250.

There was a hefty waiting list for membership when I got in early last year (6-months between applying and getting the email), then you have to sit through a orientation/safety class before you can get your range pass. That qualifies you for everything except the LR rifle range (600, 750, 1000, and 1250 yard berms). You have to take a separate class before you can get your LR sticker on your membership badge. Once you get that class done, you are open to shoot wherever you want.
There is no range officer. They have a pretty sophisticated timer on the rifle ranges and everyone follows the range rules, essentially policing each other. The guy that owns/operates it and gives the classes said it best during the membership class, "You and everyone around you are range officers. If you see someone breaking the rules do not hesitate to correct them. If they balk, come get me and I will escort them off the property."
I'd have to review the rules about early and late shooting... seems like there is a morning start time, and an evening stop time... but as long as you aren't getting there at dawn, you show up get on a bench and start shooting (staying abreast of the range clock).
The place is a training facility, too, so on the website there's a calendar for things that are going on, and whether all or parts of the range have been reserved for competitions or training. The training classes, available free for members, are alone worth the fee. I learned more about long range ballistics and scopes during the LR qualifier class than I'd learned in all my time pecking around the internet on forums and youtube videos.
The distance membership is $100 per year.

I want a new 700 "Long Range" in 7mag in a BAD way. Problem is they don't offer them in lefty and I just can't bring myself to spend a lot of money on a wrong handed gun.
