You are making a change in ~2 weeks and don't know what you want to do. There is step out on faith, but you my friend are taking it to a whole new level.

This. JB, don't get too distracted with what we each do for a living. Mine happens to be forestry and wildlife management. Turkeyboy nailed it. Start with what you enjoy doing.

Maybe it will be better under Trump but being self employed is not all it is cracked up to be with the taxes you pay. I've had self employed friends take jobs just to let someone else deal with that aspect.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Squirrel farming sounds nice...

In all seriousness, if I had to make a career change today, I would start some sort of business where I could put "at risk" people to work. Something like a lawn care business that used as many special needs employees as possible. Give them a purpose, an ability to make an income, and make a living for yourself & family as well.

There is a guy down here who owns a pest control company. He gets special needs folks to help him spray. Each crew will be 1 average Joe and 1 special helper. Joe will do all the driving, the mixing of chemicals, etc. The helper will check the termite traps, use the pump sprayer outside, and carry the clip board. The customers love it too.

I have customers/end users that go out of their way when they travel to Huntsville to say hi to several special needs guys we employee.

If theres anything useful you can do well, start an account with home advisor and go to work. I know a guy who moved here from 500miles away, set up a home advisor account and went to work the next day. He makes a good living. If you can handle the responsibility and dealing with the phblic every day, self employment is absolutely great. Home advisor is a great way to get it jump started. Good luck.

I did this for a while. Bout worked myself to death. Once your name gets out and you establish yourself as trust worthy, you'll get more calls than you can possibly cover.

Also, research window washing. I know it sounds silly, but there is serious money to be made and it's minimal investment. I made $400-$500 a day sometimes doing residential windows, but commercial windows are more reliable and steady income.

i hung up my welding hood and started my own lawn care business. Like he said you work yourself to death and have to deal with idiots every day but I’m happy and can do what I want when I want. It’s hard getting started but once you get established if your a go getter there is a lot of money to be made

Here's some of my criteria for business ventures:

- Is it scaleable???? If you're working as a one-man business, are you able to hire and delegate tasks to employees? If not, you'll eventually reach a ceiling where you can only do so much by yourself. So you start a lawn service, if you handle business right you'll eventually get to a point where you can't take on additional customers because you can only do so much. Not a great long-term business plan because it's 100% dependent on you

- " Don't go for the get rich quick, go for the get rich for sure." - Grant Cardone

- Who can help you level up? Who is already doing this business model and doing it at a high level? Are there training programs out there that I can go through? Can I hire a coach or consultant to help me grow it faster and with less headaches?

- If everything went perfect and I became swamped with business, what would that kind of lifestyle look like for me? How many hours would I have to work? How much stress would it put on my family and personal life? Is that what I want my life to look like if things were to really take off?

I would like to do lawn care full-time but I'm afraid I would starve in the Winter time. I cut one yard right now and help another guy from time-to-time and I see the potential in it.

To me, this seems like a business ripe for disruption.
Anyone else in that business afraid of roomba lawnmowers, especially 5-10years?

Contracts with a cut every 2 weeks. No matter winter or summer cut every 2 weeks, pick up limbs etc

What is your option with Alabama power? Seems that would be good....unless you just mean that you could see yourself work for them?

Got any particular skills or trades?

What is the grocery background?

One thing I have learned by running my own business is that it takes money to make money and the more you make the more you spend. I’ve got a couple of guys that help me here and there when I need them and I’m about to hire someone full time during the summer. I take care of the guys who help me which goes along way but the Lawncare deal is good but it takes good customers to make it work. I’ve got some that are loyal and some that arnt. One of the problems with it is the low balling people that want a few yards to cut just during the summer so they will under cut your price just to get the yard. Some people will stick with who they know but some will get somebody else over five or ten dollars.

How does selling shrimp out of a van sound to you?

Seriously, leverage up on your skill set and expertise. I’d imagine you have good supply chain mangement skills. Put that to use for wholesale distributing, specialty food/fruit market, etc.
